Peserta kursus kecemasan terima sijil

KUALA BELAIT, 25 Dis - Kira-kira 20 orang peserta Kursus Kecemasan anjuran Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah(PBSM) cawangan Daerah Belait menerima sijil penyertaan pada majlis penyerahan sijil di Dewan Serbaguna Rumah Tumpangan Kerajaan di sini baru-baru ini.

Hadir selaku tetamu kehormat dan seterusnya menyempurnakan majlis penyampaian sijil ialah Pengerusi Lembaga Bandaran Kuala Belait dan Seria, Awang Haji Ishak bin Haji Abu Hanifah.

Pengerusi PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait, Awang Chai Yum Fatt berkata, projek memberikan kursus kepada pekerja-pekerja di restoran dan gerai itu merupakan program berterusan bersama Jabatan Bandaran Kuala Belait dan Seria untuk memberikan pengetahuan kepada para peniaga restoran dan gerai tentang cara betul menghadapi pelanggan mengalami kecemasan semasa berada di kedai mereka dan memberikan bantuan kecemasan sebelum tibanya ambulans.

Kursus tersebut yang pertama kali dianjurkan diadakan pada 28 November lalu selama dua hari, dikendalikan Ketua Jurulatih PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait, Awang Haji Ajak bin Haji Serudin.

Antara yang diajarkan kepada peserta cara asas memberikan pertolongan kecemasan serta cara memberikan rawatan kepada mereka menghadapi kecemasan termasuk rawatan CPR, tercekik, membalut tangan patah serta cara betul mengangkat pesakit ke pengusung.

Semua peserta diberikan latihan secara praktikal dan teori di sepanjang kursus yang berlangsung di ibu pejabat PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait di Jalan Nakhoda Ragam.

RYAN Fayyad' Event Management company and the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) have joined forces to organise a celebrity futsal match between Bruneian artistes and Malaysian artistes which will take place on December 24, 2011 at the Indoor Stadium in Berakas.

"An entertaining futsal match," was how Hj Tajuddin Hj Muhammad, Ryan Fayyad' Event Management manager, described the upcoming futsal friendly. "We want people to enjoy the match and it is not going to be a serious one but will focus more on entertaining the crowd. Last year, the participants had made the crowd laugh especially when one of the participants chased the referee around the pitch. "That is the kind of entertainment the public will be treated to," he added.

Participating in the match would be Malaysia's Shaheizy Sam, Nabil Raja Lawak, Angah Raja Lawak, Jap Sepah, Yus Jambu and Tauke Jambu. From Brunei, the team will be made up of local radio DJs Daffy and Riz who will be joined by actors Hj Yahya Berudin and Hj Mohammad Firdaus Hj Salleh, Alwi (lead singer of local band 5.10am), Ak Hairul Azmi Pg Hj Tengah (bassist of D'Hask) and Hardee (The Seeds' guitarist).

The co-organisers met up at Giant Hypermarket Tasek Rimba yesterday morning to officially open up a booth to sell the tickets for the second celebrity futsal match which will be held on December 24, 2011 at 8.30 pm at the Indoor Stadium in Berakas. All those who are interested to watch the entertaining one-of-a-kind futsal match which will guarantee a night of fun and laughter are now able to purchase the tickets from the booth set up in Giant Hypermarket Tasek Rimba.

Customers can also purchase the tickets from Wywy Restaurant, BZY Restaurant in Jerudong and Terazza Restaurant.Apart from the fun, part of the proceeds will be donated by the Brunei Red Crescent Society for the Humanitarian Aid Fund for Somalia's famine victims. Tickets are priced at $50 for VIP seats, which will include packed food, a meet-the-fans session and dinner, whereas regular tickets are priced at $15, which allows fans free seating also inclusive of packed food.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Jumaat, 18 November. - Negara Brunei Darussalam komited dalam memanfaatkan potensi para belia yang merupakan tulang belakang kepada pembangunan dan masa depan negara.

Dalam mencapai hasrat ini, beberapa inisiatif telah dan sedang dijalankan bagi memanfaatkan potensi-potensi para belia di negara ini.

Perkara ini dinyatakan oleh Pemangku Setiausaha Tetap Kementerian Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan, Awang Haji Ismail bin Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Setia Dato Paduka Haji Hashim semasa merasmikan Mesyuarat Ketua-ketua Pertubuhan Belia Negara Asia Tenggara Ke-9 (9th South East Asia National Societies Youth Directors Meeting) di Radisson Hotel pagi tadi.

Menurut Awang Haji Ismail, antara inisiatif tersebut ialah Dasar Pembangunan Sumber Tenaga Manusia untuk menghasilkan rakyat yang berkemahiran dan berpendidikan tinggi bagi mencapai Wawasan Negara Brunei 2035 yang termasuk penubuhan Dana Sumber Manusia.

Antara lain tambahnya, dana tersebut adalah untuk melaksanakan skim-skim seperti Skim Latihan dan Pekerjaan, Pembangunan Kapasiti Sumber dalam Skim Sektor Swasta dan biasiswa tempatan untuk pendidikan teknikal dan vokasional di Skim Institusi Akademik Swasta.

Di samping itu jelasnya, inisitif lain juga termasuk menggalakkan keusahawanan belia dalam industri kreatif, menggalakkan belia hidup dengan gaya hidup sihat dan melancarkan perkhidmatan perintis yang menekankan mengenai membina daya tahan dan disiplin diri, patriotisme, keusahawanan dan perkhidmatan masyarakat serta melibatkan belia dalam kerja-kerja kemasyarakatan dan kesukarelaan yang seterusnya menjadikan mereka masyarakat yang penyayang.

Beliau penuh yakin dengan pengalaman luas dan rangkaian serantau dan antarabangsa yang dimiliki oleh Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Brunei (BDRCS) akan dapat memainkan peranan utama dalam menjadikan inisiatif ini berjaya.

Sementara itu, Presiden BDRCS, Datin Hajah Siti Hajar binti Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd. Yussof dalam ucapan alu-aluannya menjelaskan, mesyuarat ini merupakan program tahunan yang pertama kalinya diadakan di Republik Filipina pada tahun 2003 bertujuan untuk mengukuhkan belia-belia Asia Tenggara dalam proses kepimpinan dan membuat keputusan.

Para belia hari ini jelas beliau adalah aset negara di masa hadapan dan mesyuarat kali ini akan memfokuskan kepada isu-isu antaranya bagi kemapanan rangkaian pemimpin-pemimpin belia Asia Tenggara, belia sebagai ejen perubahan sikap, inisiatif belia global: pengemaskinian dan dasar belia serta belia dan media sosial.

Mesyuarat tiga hari itu disertai oleh perwakilan ketua-ketua Pertubuhan Negara Asia Tenggara dari Kemboja, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Filipina, Singapura, Thailand, Timor Leste dan Negara Brunei Darussalam selaku tuan rumah yang akan bergabung dengan satu matlamat yang sama iaitu bagi mengukuhkan keupayaan para belia dalam proses kepimpinan dan membuat keputusan.

Bertemakan 'Merangsang Belia Bulan Sabit Merah - Menyelamatkan Nyawa, Merubah Minda' (Inspiring RC Youth - saving lives, changing minds), mesyuarat dianjurkan oleh Persekutuan Palang Merah Antarabangsa dan Delegasi Pertubuhan Bulan Sabit Merah di Bangkok dan disokong oleh BDRCS.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 18 Nov - Mesyuarat Tahunan Pengarah-Pengarah Persatuan Belia Asia Tenggara merupakan program yang mula dilaksanakan pada tahun 2003 di Filipina yang bertujuan untuk memperkukuhkan lagi belia-belia rantau Asia Tenggara dari segi kepimpinan dan proses membuat keputusan.

Tahun ini Negara Brunei Darussalam menjadi tuan rumah bagi mesyuarat ke-9 di mana upacara perasmiannya diadakan di Hotel Radisson, Bandar Seri Begawan hari ini, yang disempurnakan oleh Pemangku Setiausaha Tetap Kementerian Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan Haji Ismail Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Setia Dato Paduka Haji Hashim.

Presiden Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Brunei Darussalam Datin Hajah Siti Hajar Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof dalam ucapan alu-aluan beliau menyatakan mesyuarat selama tiga hari itu disertai oleh pengarah dan pemimpin dari persatuan kebangsaan Asia Tenggara iaitu Kemboja, Laos, Malaysia, Filipina, Singapura, Timor Leste dan Brunei.

Mesyuarat itu jelas Datin Hajah Siti Hajar lagi bermatlamat untuk mencapai satu matlamat utama iaitu untuk memperkukuhkan lagi keupayaan belia-belia dari segi kepimpinan mereka dan keupayaan untuk membuat keputusan yang akan membentuk usaha pembangunan belia.

Sementara itu, Penasihat Pembangunan Persatuan Kebangsaan, Persekutuan Bulan Sabit Merah, Palang Merah Antarabangsa, Nina Nobel dalam kata alu-aluan beliau berkata bahawa dalam Deklarasi Belia yang dimeterai pada 2009 semasa Tahun Belia, belia-belia dunia mengetengahkan pelbagai masalah yang bukan sahaja mengancam bumi tetapi juga manusia seperti kemiskinan, konflik, keganasan, migrasi, penyakit, diskriminasi, perubahan iklim dan kini jumlah penduduk.

Sehubungan dengan itu, Nina menyatakan bahawa deklarasi itu merupakan dokumen dan alat yang berguna kerana bukan sahaja ia mengetengahkan dan menangani isu-isu serius secara berhadapan tetapi juga menunjukkan komitmen belia untuk menangani isu berkenaan dengan mengambil tindakan konkrit.

Dalam pada masa yang sama, Nina mengingatkan belia agar kembali kepada komitmen yang dimeterai mereka khususnya dalam melaksanakan 20 tindakan dalam empat bidang kerja kemanusiaan iaitu dalam menerap nilai-nilai kemanusiaan, pembangunan persatuan kebangsaan, kesihatan dan pengurusan bencana.

Beliau juga menyeru belia untuk tidak sentiasa berpendapat bahawa pembiayaan itu adalah untuk jangka masa pendek sahaja, selalu mengambil kira impak dan keberkesanan kegiatan yang dilaksanakan, tidak mudah hilang dalam birokrasi dan hierarki persatuan serta tidak takut untuk mempersoalkan apa yang sedang berlaku.

Beliau menyarankan kepada belia-belia untuk tidak gentar melakukan sesuatu perubahan iaitu dengan melakukan perubahan dalam diri dan minda mereka sendiri.

Mesyuarat tiga hari itu akan menumpukan kepada empat isu utama iaitu Rangkaian Pengarah-Pengarah Belia Asia Tenggara yang berkekalan, Belia sebagai ejen bagi perubahan tingkah laku, Inisiatif Belia Global: Perkembangan dan Dasar Belia serta Belia dan Media Sosial.

Giat tingkat potensi belia

Haji Ismail menyatakan bahawa Brunei terus komited untuk merealisasikan potensi sebenar belia negara yang dikenal pasti sebagai tulang belakang pembangunan dan masa depan negara.

Haji Ismail bergambar ramai dengan ketua dan pemimpin Persatuan Kebangsaan Asia Tenggara yang menyertai mesyuarat itu.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 18 Nov - Negara Brunei Darussalam terus komited untuk berusaha meningkatkan potensi belia-belia negara yang dikenal pasti sebagai tulang belakang pembangunan dan masa depan negara.

Di antara inisiatif yang dilaksanakan dan sedang dirangka oleh pihak kerajaan termasuk pelaksanaan dasar Pembangunan
Sumber Manusia untuk melahirkan masyarakat yang berilmu dan berkemahiran untuk mencapai Wawasan Negara 2035 di mana antara usaha itu adalah penubuhan Tabung Sumber Manusia.

Penubuhan tabung itu di antara lain bertujuan untuk melaksanakan pelbagai skim seperti Skim Latihan dan Pekerjaan, Skim Pembangunan Sumber Kapasiti di dalam Sektor Swasta dan Skim Biasiswa Bagi Pendidikan Teknikal dan Vokasional di Institusi Pendidikan Swasta Tempatan di mana dasar Sumber Pembangunan Manusia itu adalah termasuk bagi semua belia.

Perkara itu dijelaskan oleh Pemangku Setiausaha Tetap Kementerian Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan, Haji Ismail Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Setia Dato Paduka Haji Hashim ketika berucap di Perasmian Mesyuarat Pengarah Persatuan Belia Kebangsaan Asia Tenggara Ke-9 yang berlangsung di Hotel Radisson, Bandar Seri Begawan, hari ini.

"Bagi mereka yang tidak dapat menerusi pengajian dalam aliran akademik formal, Pusat Pembangunan Belia akan melatih mereka dengan kemahiran yang diperlukan oleh pasaran."

Beliau juga berkata bahawa dasar Pembangunan Sumber Manusia itu juga merangkumi ideologi Melayu Islam Beraja. Di samping itu lagi, kerajaan terus berusaha untuk menggalakkan keusahawanan di kalangan golongan belia termasuk dalam industri kreatif di mana menerusi Tabung Pembangunan Sumber Manusia, diharap akan dapat mengukuhkan lagi keupayaan perkembangan dan penyelidikan untuk memaksimumkan potensi belia negara dalam bidang kreativiti dan inovasi.

Di samping itu juga, usaha untuk mempromosikan gaya hidup yang sihat di kalangan belia juga sedang giat dijalankan dan juga akan melancarkan program perantis, perkhidmatan belia kebangsaan yang akan menumpukan kepada pembangunan disiplin diri dan ketahanan, patriotisme, keusahawanan dan perkhidmatan masyarakat.

"Kami berharap untuk melihat belia-belia yang bersemangat tinggi yang berdaya tahan dan yang mampu berhadapan dengan cabaran besar serta kesusahan."

Usaha juga dilaksanakan untuk menggalakkan lebih ramai belia untuk menyumbangkan khidmat bakti secara sukarela dalam kerja-kerja kebajikan supaya akan melahirkan sebuah masyarakat yang penyayang.

Menyentuh mengenai usaha untuk mempromosikan kerja-kerja sukarela di kalangan belia, Haji Ismail yakin bahawa Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Brunei dengan pengalaman yang luas dan rangkaian serantau dan kebangsaan mampu untuk memainkan peranan yang penting bagi memastikan kejayaan inisiatif berkenaan.

HRD policy plan to benefit nation's youths

The Brunei Government has undertaken several initiatives in a commitment to realise the potential of its youths. In the pipeline is the implementation of the Human Resource Development (HRD) policy, to produce skilled and highly educated citizens, as well as to accomplish the National Vision towards 2035.

A Human Resource Fund will also be used to implement various schemes, such as training and employment schemes, capacity building schemes in the private sector, and scholarship schemes for technical and vocational education in local private institutions.

"For those unable to continue in the formal academic stream, the Youth Development Centre will train them on skills required by the market. The HRD policy also includes inculcating our Malay Islamic Monarchy ideology."

This was revealed by the Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Hj Ismail bin Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Setia Dato Paduka Hj Hashim, at the opening ceremony for the 9th Southeast Asia National Societies Youth Directors Meeting yesterday at the Radisson Hotel.

The policy, he said, will also incorporate the promotion of youth entrepreneurships, including in other areas, such as creative industries, with the aim to strengthen research and development capabilities in order to maximise the potential in the areas of creativity and innovation.

Aside from this, other objectives include promoting a healthy lifestyle, as well as launching the pilot national youth service that emphasises on self-discipline and resilience, patriotism, entrepreneurship and community service to produce high-spirited youths who are resilient and can take on challenges.

The policy will also involve more youths in volunteering and community work to create a more caring society.

The three-day meeting is co-organised by the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society and the IFRC SEA (International Federation of Red Crescent Southeast Asia) Regional Delegation.

It aims to help youths in the SEA region in their leadership development and decision-making process. Brunei took part for the first time at last year's eighth meeting in Cambodia.

Youth directors and leaders from eight different national societies of the Southeast Asia region will convene with one common goal throughout the meeting.

Four issues will be the meeting's areas of focus: Sustainability of SEA Youth Directors' Network; Youth as Agents for Behavioural Change; Global Youth Initiatives, as well as the Update and Youth Policy and Youth and the Social Media.

MINISTRY of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday called on the contribution of the Brunei Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) to help in achieving the country's initiative on youth development.

The statement was made by the Ministry's Acting Permanent Secretary Hj Ismail Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Setia Dato Paduka Hj Hashim when he officiated at the 9th Southeast Asia National Societies Youth Directors' Meeting, which is co-organised by BDRCS and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) who were represented by a delegation from Bangkok.

At the Radisson Hotel in the capital, Hj Ismail said Brunei Darussalam is committed to harness the potential of the youth, who are the backbone of the country's development.

He said that the country's initiative on youth development touched several issues such as human resource development policy which included the establishment of human resource fund to produce highly educated and skilled people to achieve the National Vision Brunei 2035.

"I hope that your three-day Youth Directors' Meeting in Brunei Darussalam will enable you to share experiences and best practices in addressing youth and humanitarian issues and achieve your meeting's objectives," he said.

Attending the ceremony was representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Nina Nobel, who is also the National Society Development advisor for the Southeast Asia Region.

Nobel underscored the importance of setting practical priorities to achieve the goals of the national society's agenda.

"Carefully choose a few priorities each year to focus on and work together in an integrated and coordinated way to build on the momentum of your national society and government platforms," she said.

She also told the participating youth leaders to not be afraid of questioning the status quo.

"This is the time of dynamic action and change and your role as youth leaders is to inspire the youth of Southeast Asia to dare to make a difference in their own communities," she said.

Southeast Asia Youth Directors' Meeting is an annual programme that was first organised in the Philippines in 2003, aimed at strengthening the leadership skill and decision-making process of the youth in Southeast Asia region.

Wanita tua terabai dibantu

Dayang Shim Kim Soon hanya bertemankan tiga ekor anjing yang akan menyalak jika sesiapa menghampiri pintu pagar rumah tuannya.

KUALA BELAIT, 6 Nov - Seorang wanita warga emas yang tinggal bersendirian menarik perhatian Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait dan dengan kerjasama Jabatan Pembangunan Masyarakat (JAPEM) cawangan Daerah Belait telah sama-sama berkunjung untuk meninjau keadaan wanita itu hari ini.

Wanita tersebut Dayang Shim Kim Soon, 83, tinggal di rumahnya di Lot 4017 Simpang 284 Jalan Singa Menteri Kampung Mumong. Selama ini dia tinggal bersendirian dalam keadaan kakinya yang sakit dan hanya bertongkat kayu untuk berjalan, selain kurang jelas penglihatannya.

Semasa kunjungan Pengerusi PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait Awang Chai Yum Fatt bersama dengan Penolong Pegawai Pembangunan Masyarakat Daerah Belait Awang Ahmad bin Kasmani, telah turut menghulurkan sumbangan kepada Dayang Shim Kim Soon berupa makanan asasi daripada JAPEM bagi menampung keperluannya yang hanya menerima pencen usia tua sejumlah $250 sebulan.

Dayang Shim Kim Soon, ketika memberitahu Media Permata berkata, dia sudah bercerai dengan suaminya sejak berusia 20 tahun dan mempunyai seorang anak yang tidak membesar dengannya, tetapi sehingga kini dia tidak pernah dikunjungi anaknya, dan sejak bercerai dia bekerja sebagai buruh di Jabatan Bandaran dan tinggal di Kampung Sampah.

Dengan usahanya menghimpunkan wang gaji, dia akhirnya mampu membina sebuah rumah yang didiami masa ini di atas tanah tumpang sementara.

Rumahnya dalam keadaan berselerak dan tidak mampu membersihnya kerana keadaannya yang uzur.

Beliau yang merupakan penduduk tetap, mengalami sakit kaki dan berjalan menggunakan tongkat. Beliau mendapat perubatan percuma di Kampung Pandan yang merawati penyakit dengan menggunakan katil elektrik.

"Setiap hari Isnin hingga Sabtu, saya berjalan sendiri untuk pergi ke premis tersebut, tetapi jika saya penat, saya akan berhenti dan jika ada orang menumpangkan, saya akan ikut, begitu juga apabila hendak pulang dari sana," katanya.

Dayang Shim Kim Soon, berasal dari China, datang ke negara ini bersama kedua ibu bapanya sejak dia kecil lagi. Setelah kematian kedua ibu bapanya, dia tiada mempunyai sanak saudara lagi di sini.

Selain yang menemaninya pada masa ini ialah tiga ekor anjing yang akan menyalak apabila melihat orang mendekati pagar rumah tuannya itu.

Di samping itu, beliau juga mengusahakan kerja-kerja mengutip tin-tin kosong untuk dijual sebagai menambah pendapatannya yang katanya tidak mencukupi baginya yang juga perlu membayar bil-bil elektrik, air, gas dan sebagainya.

Tin yang dijual hanya dapat menghasilkannya sejumlah tiga sen bagi satu kilogram tin kosong yang kadang-kadang turut disumbangkan oleh jirannya.

Pengerusi PBSM Awang Chai Yum Fatt, pula memberitahu mereka akan membantu wanita itu dalam membersihkan kawasan rumahnya yang sudah berselerak dengan tin-tin kosong bagi menghindari jangkitan penyakit nyamuk aedes dan sebagainya.

Rombongan PBSM Daerah Belait ketika mengadakan kunjungan ke Rumah Orang Tua di Seria.

SERIA, 9 Okt - Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah (PBSM) cawangan Daerah Belait meneruskan lagi program kemasyarakatan mereka dengan mengadakan lawatan ke Rumah Kediaman Orang Tua dekat sini, hari ini.

Ketika kunjungan, rombongan diketuai Pengerusi PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait, Awang Chai Yum Fatt dialu-alukan pengerusi Rumah Orang Tua berkenaan, Awang David Teo Kian Khong.

Antara lain kunjungan bertujuan meninjau dan mengenal pasti keperluan rumah orang tua dan dalam masa yang sama PBSM akan menyusun program jangka panjang masa akan datang yang bersesuaian dengan keadaan penghuni rumah itu.

Menurut Penolong Pengerusi PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait, Awang Haji Ismail Kassim, antara program yang dijangka akan disusun di rumah itu adalah seperti mengajak warga emas di sana melakukan sesuatu dan mengelakkan mereka daripada hanya duduk diam seperti sekarang ini dan merasa sangat bosan.

Sehubungan itu, antara program yang dirancang adalah seperti memberikan mereka latihan ringan membuat kraf tangan, berkebun dan sesi rawatan sebagai kegiatan yang boleh menjadikan mereka ceria dan merasa tidak tersisih serta merasa dikasihi oleh masyarakat.

Matlamat PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait kini adalah bekerjasama dengan Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JAPEM) dan agensi-agensi kerajaan yang lainnya untuk terus melaksanakan kegiatan sukarelawan membantu masyarakat termasuklah orang kurang berkemampuan, dan warga emas serta pelajar yang tidak berkemampuan di kawasan dalam dan luar bandar.

Awang Yum Fatt pula memberitahu, persatuan itu setakat ini, sudah melaksanakan program membuat kunjungan hormat ke rumah-rumah penghulu di daerah ini, dan ia itu akan diteruskan dengan kunjungan ke rumah ketua kampung.

Kunjungan akan dibuat bersama JAPEM untuk mendengar dan berkongsi sama dengan pemimpin akar umbi di mukim dan kampung tentang masalah yang dihadapi oleh penduduk di setiap mukim dan kampung.

Menurutnya, PBSM Daerah Belait dengan kerjasama JAPEM akan sentiasa memberikan sokongan ke arah melaksanakan kerja-kerja sukarelawan membantu masyarakat yang memerlukan termasuklah menghulurkan bantuan jika diperlukan.

Di samping itu, katanya, PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait juga sedang aktif pada masa ini menjayakan program berterusan setiap penghujung minggu dalam Gerak Sihat di kawasan Taman Persisiran Sungai, bekerjasama dengan Jabatan Bandaran Kuala Belait dan Seria, serta mengadakan latihan kecemasan sejak bulan lalu dan akan diteruskan lagi pada pertengahan bulan ini melibatkan lebih 50 peserta di kalangan peniaga gerai dan kedai di pekan Belait dan Seria.

KUALA BELAIT, 7 Okt - Jabatan Pembangunan Masyarakat (JAPEM) dan Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah (PBSM) cawangan Daerah Belait mengadakan sesi lawatan ke rumah Penghulu Labi, Awang Haji Kamarhan Haji Atma hari ini.

Lawatan anjuran PBSM itu diketuai pengerusi persatuan, Awang Chai Yum Fatt disertai sama Ketua Perkembangan Sosial dan Kesejahteraan PBSM, Awang Lim Thian Ming. Ia antara lain bertujuan memberikan sokongan padu kepada penghulu memberikan kerjasama dan kerja sukarelawan yang diperlukan selain menghulur sumbangan kepada masyarakat kampung yang memerlukan berbentuk keperluan asasi serta membantu pelajar yang kurang berkemampuan di mukim berkenaan.

Di samping itu, JAPEM juga berharap penghulu dan penduduk dapat menghubungi pihak jabatan mereka jika memerlukan bantuan dan jabatan itu akan bekerjasama dengan PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait menghulurkan bantuan yang diperlukan.

Menurut JAPEM, setakat ini PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait sudah menghulurkan beberapa bantuan berbentuk keperluan asasi kepada keluarga yang memerlukan di daerah ini demi membantu meringankan beban keluarga berkenaan.

Apart from providing volunteer services to the community, the Red Crescent Society Belait Branch also extends its assistance to needy families and individuals in the district.

The Red Crescent Society Belait Branch led by Chairman Chai Yum Fatt visited Penghulu of Mukim Labi, Haji Kamarhan bin Haji Atma. The chairman was also accompanied by members of the Community Development Department (JAPEM) and the Red Crescent Society Head of Social Development, Lim Thian Ming.

The visit was made to gain support from the community leader to assist the members in helping the underprivileged people within the remote area of Belait District.

With the help of the Penghulu, JAPEM and Red Crescent Society members will be able to extend help and services to people or families beyond their reach.

During the visit, the Belait Red Crescent Society donated food and school supplies to help needy students.

JAPEM is also seeking cooperation from other people to report on any destitute families or individuals living in the remote areas so that they can reach out to help them.

Through the support of JAPEM, the Belait Red Crescent Society extended help to four destitute families in the district, contributing food supplies and other daily necessities.

KUALA BELAIT, 4 Okt - Seramai 18 anggota Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah (PBSM) cawangan Daerah Belait menyertai Kursus Latihan Kecemasan baru-baru ini bertujuan memberikan pengetahuan dan pengalaman kepada anggota baru tentang cara betul memberikan bantuan kecemasan.

Kursus dua hari itu juga bagi menerangkan beberapa perkara lain yang berkaitan dengannya agar anggota dapat menyebarkan pengetahuan mereka kepada rakan lain terutama sekali yang belum menyertainya.

Ia berlangsung di ibu pejabat baru PBSM di No 73 Jalan Nakhoda Ragam di sini dan dikendalikan Penolong Pengerusi PBSM Daerah Belait, Awang Haji Ismail Kassim.

Menurut Awang Haji Ismail, kursus itu akan terus diadakan dari semasa ke semasa termasuk membukakannya kepada orang awam yang memohon menyertainya serta persatuan lain di daerah ini.

KUALA BELAIT, 25 Sept- Lebih 50 ahli-ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait diketuai Pengerusinya, Awang Chai Yum Fatt telah menyertai program Gerak Sihat di kawasan Taman Persiaran hari ini.

Turut menyertainya ialah Pemangku Pengerusi Lembaga Bandaran Kuala Belait dan Seria Awang Sarih Tabong.

Program Gerak Sihat anjuran Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah dengan kerjasama Jabatan Bandaran Kuala Belait dan Seria merupakan satu aktiviti senaman ringan yang dilakukan setiap penghujung minggu dan turut dibukakan untuk penyertaan orang ramai.

Program yang dilancarkan hari ini oleh Awang Sarih Tabong bermula pukul 7:30 pagi selama dua jam dan akan membawa orang ramai yang menyertai bersenam ringan melalui gerak sihat Tai chi, Yuan ji dan Belait Walk Out terutama sekali difokuskan kepada kalangan warga emas yang ingin terus hidup sihat dan cergas.

Mengetuai gerak sihat, Dayang Chan Lai Miew iaitu Ketua Unit Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah. Beliau merupakan jurulatih dalam pergerakan-pergerakan senaman tersebut yang turut membuat latihan di kawasan ibu pejabat Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah setiap hari Jumaat.

Menurut Awang Sarih, Jabatan Bandaran Kuala Belait dan Seria memberikan sokongan sepenuhnya kepada Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah yang mempunyai inisiatif untuk menggerakkan program kesihatan tersebut setiap penghujung minggu, selain untuk memberikan kesedaran kepada masyarakat betapa pentingnya menjaga kesihatan sepanjang masa, dan aktiviti seperti itu juga turut meningkatkan kualiti kehidupan mereka.

Di samping itu, ia juga bertujuan untuk menambah ceriakan lagi keadaan kawasan Pekan Belait, terutama sekali Taman Persiaran supaya ia sentiasa diguna pakai ke arah kegiatan atau aktiviti yang bermanfaat dan tidak hanya tinggal terbiar begitu sahaja.

Program tersebut berkesinambungan dengan pelantikan Pengerusi Lembaga Bandaran Kuala Belait dan Seria Awang Haji Mohd Ishak Haji Abu Hanifah sebagai salah seorang Penasihat Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait.

To ensure the effective operations of the Red Crescent Society in Belait, the NGO yesterday morning officiated its base and training centre at Jalan Nakhoda Ragam in KB. Chai Yum Fatt, Chairman of the Belait Red Crescent Society, said that the base would serve as a venue to conduct training and other activities as well to coordinate any humanitarian programmes.

The centre will facilitate the society to expand its mission towards disseminating humanitarian values and extending prompt assistance in the event of disaster emergencies, and community health and social welfare, as well as blood donations. The chairman noted that under the newly appointed committee's leadership, the society will continue its efforts to collaborate with government agencies and general communities in order to expand services in line with its principles.

Apart from providing humanitarian services and volunteering, the society also offers assistance beyond its usual scope by helping needy communities in the district and making contributions in the form of food, workforce and also first-aid kits to schools. With the opening of the society's centre, the public can also just visit the base to obtain any needed assistance or voluntary services.

Ahli-ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Cawangan Daerah Brunei Muara mengadakan Majlis Membaca Yasin dan Tahlil di Kubah Makam Diraja kelmarin.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 28 Ogos - Kira-kira 40 orang ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Cawangan Daerah Brunei Muara telah mengadakan Majlis Membaca Yasin dan Tahlil di Kubah Makam Diraja bagi Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien dan Al-Marhumah Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit pagi tadi.

Majlis diketuai oleh Timbalan Presiden persatuan berkenaan Haji Awang Abdul Alim Haji Awang Osman dan Setiausaha Agungnya Haji Julaini Haji Latip.

Bacaan surah Yassin dan Tahlil pula diketuai oleh Pegawai Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Cawangan Daerah Brunei Muara, Awang Abdul Qaiyum Haji Metussin.

Majlis dihadiri oleh pegawai-pegawai peringkat Kebangsaan dan peringkat Daerah serta ahli-ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah seluruh Negara.

Majlis tersebut merupakan kali kedua diadakan yang melibatkan semua peringkat ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah dari ke empat-empat daerah termasuk peringkat kebangsaan dan akan menjadikannya sebagai projek tahunan persatuan itu.

Majlis itu diadakan bertujuan untuk memperingati yang telah pergi kembali ke rahmatullah. Di samping itu untuk mengumpulkan semua warga Persatuan Sabit Merah lama dan baru dari semua peringkat untuk saling kenal mengenali serta mengeratkan lagi hubungan silaturahim dan terus memupuk semangat bersatu padu, bekerjasama dan melahirkan sifat kekeluargaan di dalam berpersatuan.

The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society held a tahlil at the Royal Mausoleum for Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien and Al-Marhumah Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit.

Haji Awg Abd Alim bin Haji Awang Osman, Deputy President, and Haji Julaini bin Haji Latip, Secretary General, attended the ceremony.

The event began with a recital of surah al-fatihah by Awang Abdul Qaiyum bin Haji Metussin, officer from the Brunei-Muara District branch of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society.

His Majesty's father, Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar `Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien passed away on September 7, 1986, while His Majesty's mother Al Marhumah Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit passed away on September 13, 1979. Also in attendance were senior officers, national and district level officers and members of the society.

The tahlil and surah yaasiin were also recited. This event is part of the annual religious activities of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society to enliven the month of Ramadhan.

Anggota Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah bergotong royong membersihkan tanah perkuburan sebagai kerja amal di bulan Ramadan.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 26 Ogos - Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Brunei Muara telah mengadakan aktiviti kerja amal membersihkan Tanah Perkuburan Orang-Orang Islam, Halangan, Kampung Tamoi, di sini, petang tadi.

Aktiviti itu dihadiri oleh pegawai-pegawai dan anggota Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Cawangan Daerah Brunei Muara yang terdiri daripada guru-guru pengawas dan penuntut-penuntut sekolah menengah seluruh Daerah Brunei Muara.

Aktiviti itu merupakan salah satu projek tahunan Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Brunei dan Muara bagi tahun 2011 yang bertujuan untuk mengumpulkan semua warga lama dan baru Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah dari semua peringkat untuk saling kenal mengenali bagi mengeratkan lagi hubungan silaturahim.

Ia juga bertujuan untuk memupuk semangat bersatu padu, bekerjasama dan melahirkan sifat amal kemanusiaan serta khidmat sukarelanya yang murni demi agama, bangsa dan negara.

SERTAI MAJLIS JUNJUNG ZIARAH DAN RAMAH MESRA BAGI DAERAH BRUNEI-MUARA

AHAD, 24 Julai 2011 – PBSM NBD Cawangan Daerah Brunei-Muara telah menyertai ribuan rakyat dan penduduk di daerah ini bagi Majlis Ramah Mesra dan Junjung Ziarah Sempena Hari Ulangtahun Keputeraan Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam Kali Ke 65 bagi daerah Brunei-Muara. Majlis berlangsung di Taman Haji Sir Muda Omarali Saifuddien, Bandar Seri Begawan hari ini.

Seramai 100 orang ahli persatuan yang terdiri dari pegawai-pegawai persatuan dari ibu pejabat, pejabat cawangan daerah dan unit pertubuhan sekolah-sekolah menengah menunggu keberangkatan tiba KDYMM di khemah No. 83. Sementara menunggu keberangkatan KDYMM ke khemah Persatuan, kira-kira 50 orang ahli menjalankan tugas masing-masing di sekitar Taman dan kawasan berdekatan di samping membantu pihak perubatan di khemah-khemah perubatan sebelum menyertai rakan-rakan yang lain sedang menunggu di khemah.

Sekitar jam 12:20 tengahari, rombongan KDYMM telah tiba di khemah Persatuan dengan disambut dengan laungan “Daulat Kebawah Duli Tuan Patik” sebanyak 3 kali yang diketuai oleh seorang ahli persatuan berpangkat sarjan. Selepas itu baginda berkenan menerima junjung ziarah dari ahli-ahli Persatuan di samping berbual mesra dengan beberapa orang dari kalangan mereka.

Turut menyertai rombongan KDYMM ialah DYTM Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota, DYTM Paduka Seri Pengiran Perdana Wazir, DYTM Paduka Seri Pengiran Bendahara, DYTM Paduka Seri Pengiran Digadong serta putera-putera baginda lainnya.

Ahli-ahli PBSM NBD juga telah menyertai Majlis Santap yang diadakan sejurus selepas itu di perkarangan Bangunan Lapau, Jabatan Adat Istiadat. Acara berakhir pada kira-kira jam 2 petang.

THE medical team assigned at the Temburong District's 'get-together' ceremony with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam recorded a total of seven cases of casualties, which mainly involved students.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Senior Nurse Hj Helmi Hj Nayan, who led and monitored the 21 member team, said he was confident that his team would be able to handle any situation that might arised, since he had sufficient number of staff and equipment. His only main concern was the weather instability.

"Only the weather can be our problem as it is the probable cause for a heatstroke," he said. Dividing the medical stations into three main camps, Hj Helmi elaborated each of their specialised functions where one would cater to the VIP guest, another one was for the performers and one for the public.

The seven cases that needed attention yesterday involved mainly students who suffered dizziness,stomachache and one experienced fatigue. There was also two cases of students stung by bees and a student suffered a broken arm from a fall.

"In most cases, the students suffered dizziness or weak because they don't eat the food which were given to them," said Hj Helmi.

"Sometimes they are not used to the food or just don't like it so they don't eat it hence the result."

A total of 14 schools participated in yesterday's event where students came to either to wave the mini national flags or doing the field performance during His Majesty's visit to the Temburong District at the Civic Centre area in Bangar Town.

Sertai Majlis Santap Pasukan Beruniform

AHAD, 17 Julai 2011 - Pertubuhan Bulan Sabit Merah Negara Brunei Darussalam dari keempat-empat Cawangan Daerah telah menyertai Majlis Santap Pasukan Pertubuhan Beruniform yang diadakan sempena Hari Puja Usia Kali Ke 65 Tahun Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah di Dewan Persantapan, Istana Nurul Iman.

Seramai hampir 150 orang ahli persatuan yang mewakili daerah masing-masing telah tiba di pintu masuk istana seawal jam 6 petang. Majlis bermula pada jam 7:30 malam dan pada jam 8 malam adalah keberangkatan Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia ke Dewan Santap. Sejurus ketibaan baginda, Doa Selamat Hari Puja Usia telah dibacakan oleh Yang Berhormat Pehin Mufti Kerajaan dan kemudian diikuti dengan majlis santap.

Setelah selesai, KDYMM berkenan berjunjung ziarah dan beramah-mesra dengan anggota-anggota beruniform. Setibanya di benteng PBSM NBD, baginda berkenan berbual-bual mesra dengan beberapa orang ahli persatuan. Turut menyertai junjung ziarah ini ialah DYTM Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota, YTM Paduka Pengiran Muda Haji Abdul Azeem, YTM Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Haji Abdul Malik dan YTM Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Haji Abdul Mateen.

Di antara ahli-ahli PBSM NBD yang pertama kali menyertai rakan sepasukan mereka di dalam majlis ini ialah ahli-ahli PBSM NBD dari Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) yang diketuai oleh Abdul Hakeem bin Haji Roslan, mahasiswa Tahun 1 di kolej universiti berkenaan.

Selain daripada itu, kesempatan ini juga digunakan oleh ahli-ahli PBSM NBD untuk menikmati keindahan Istana Nurul Iman dengan mengambil gambar berlatarkan kawasan istana khususnya di kawasan Dewan Persantapan. Majlis selesai pada kira-kira jam 11:30 malam.

PBSM NBD adalah salah sebuah pasukan sokongan tindakbalas kecemasan semasa acara-acara keraiean sempena dengan Hari Puja Usia KDYMM sama ada di peringkat kebangsaan mahupun di peringkat daerah.

Berangkat sama Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Perdana Wasir Sahibul Himmah Wal-Waqar Pengiran Muda Mohamed Bolkiah, Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Zariah.

Turut berangkat ke Majlis Santap Malam yang berlangsung di Istana Nurul Iman pada malam hari ini, ialah Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Bendahara Seri Maharaja Permaisuara Pengiran Muda Haji Sufri Bolkiah dan Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Bini Hajah Faizah, Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Digadong Sahibul Mal Pengiran Muda Haji Jefri Bolkiah dan Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Norhayati, serta kerabat-kerabat Diraja yang lain.

Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia kemudian berkenan untuk berziarah dan beramah mesra bersama Menteri-Menteri Kabinet, dan diteruskan beramah mesra bersama anggota-anggota beruniform Diraja Brunei.

Memberkati majlis persantapan diraja dengan membacakan doa kesyukuran sempena sambutan hari puja usia Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia disempurnakan oleh Mufti Kerajaan,Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Haji Abdul Aziz Juned.

Berangkat dan hadir ialah Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran-pengiran Cheteria, Menteri-menteri Kabinet, Ahli-ahli Majlis Mesyuarat, Timbalan-timbalan Menteri, Pengiran-pengiran Peranakan, Pehin-pehin Manteri dan Manteri-manteri Pendalaman dan para perwakilan asing ke negara ini serta pegawai-pegawai kanan kerajaan.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam feted thousands of uniformed personnel from various uniformed government agencies and associations to a banquet last night in conjunction with the caring monarch's 65th birthday celebration.

The annual tradition held in conjunction with His Majesty's birthday celebration, the banquet hall that accommodated thousands of uniformed personnel was decorated with fresh flora.

The event was graced by Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Saleha, HRH Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince, HRH Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, HRH Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, YAM Pengiran Bini Hajah Faizah Dato Haji Nasir, HRH Prince Hj Jefri Bolkiah, HRH Prince Hj 'Abdul 'Azim, HRH Prince 'Abdul Malik, HRH Prince 'Abdul Mateen, HRH Princess Hjh Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah, HRH Princess Hjh Majeedah Nuurul Bolkiah and other members of the royal family.

Uniformed personnel invited for the banquet consisted of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Brunei Police Force, Fire and Rescue Department, Royal Customs and Excise Department and Brunei Scouts and Girl Guides Associations etc.

After the dinner, His Majesty greeted all the uniformed personnel in attendance.

The uniformed personnel carry on their shoulders the responsibility of maintaining the security and sovereignty of the nation.

The police play no lesser role in upholding the law, maintaining peace and securing the prosperity of the nation. They form the backbone of law and order in the country.

The contribution and importance of the Fire and Rescue Services is also significant as they also put their lives on the line in rescuing people and saving properties.

The voluntary uniformed personnel, such as the Red Crescent, Scouts and even uniformed cadets play an important role in community affairs and development.

These associations play an important role in moulding the youths to be responsible and caring individuals with good character and in times of need, these associations always lend a helping hand to society.

KUALA BELAIT, 17 Julai - Demi keselamatan dan kesihatan orang awam sepanjang berlangsungnya Majlis Ramah Mesra dan Junjung Ziarah sempena Hari Keputeraan Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei ke-65, Hospital Suri Seri Begawan turut terlibat memberikan perkhidmatan dengan menempatkan empat klinik di kawasan Padang Bandaran dekat sini, hari ini.

Pemangku Pegawai Jururawat selaku Penyelaras Kecemasan majlis itu, Awang Salehkamal Haji Badarudin memberitahu Media Permata, hospital berkenaan menempatkan 150 orang melibatkan doktor, jururawat dan kakitangan sokongan di sana.

Mereka ditempatkan di klinik-klinik A, B, C dan D dengan setiap satu dilengkapi dengan doktor, jururawat dan kakitangan sokongan bagi memberikan perkhidmatan kesihatan jika berlaku kecemasan ke atas orang ramai. Dua puluh dua orang, termasuk 12 lelaki, dilaporkan menerima rawatan dari pagi sehingga acara berakhir kira-kira pukul 1 tengah hari lagi.

Kes-kes rawatan ke atas pesakit berkenaan adalah berdasarkan kerana kehangatan cuaca panas dan penyahidratan.

Selain doktor dan jururawat, hospital itu turut mendapat bantuan daripada Perkhidmatan Perubatan Tentera (MRS), Pusat Kesihatan Panaga dan Pusat Kesihatan Sungai Liang dengan lima jentera ambulans.

Twenty-two people collapsed from heat exhaustion during the first meet-and-greet session with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday morning, held in conjunction with the monarch's 65th birthday celebrations at Padang Bandaran Kuala Belait.

Fortunately, they were all in good hands thanks to the readily available teams of medical personnel who had been deployed at the scene to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.

Eighteen medical teams from Suri Seri Begawan Hospital and Panaga Hospital comprising doctors, nurses, support staff and paramedics strolled the fields making sure the strong crowd of VIPs, students and other well-wishers were in good shape.

Red Crescent Society volunteers were also on hand to assist medics monitoring the thousands-strong crowd.

According to one of the medical teams, the affected were mainly those struck by heat exhaustion or dehydration, who were then brought to one of the five makeshift first-aid stations strategically located at the venue. No admission cases were recorded.

According to a Suri Seri Begawan Hospital personnel, most people suffered hypoglyceamia (low-blood sugar) because they had neglected breakfast and had not properly hydrated themselves throughout the morning.

Medical officers advise those who will attend future meet-and-greet sessions to get a good night's rest, but most importantly, to have breakfast and bring bottled water, especially for the flag-waving students.

PRIDE was visible on the faces of the 353 uniformed cadets from 11 uniformed organisations from Brunei-Muara as they were chosen as representatives for His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan's birthday celebrations yesterday.

Cadets from various organisations such as Fire and Rescue, Police and the Armed Forces, Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent and scouts stood proudly at the Taman Haji Sir Omar 'Ali Saifuddien for his Majesty's inspection.

Md Amirulkizal Makmun, 30, led the Red Crescent group, and despite being his fourth time to participate in the Sultan's birthday festivities he still looked forward to be a part of the assembly.

First time participating as a Fire and Rescue representative, Siti Nurkhalilah Hj Abdullah, 21, said she was excited to be able to have this opportunity and described His Majesty to be a great, kind and generous leader.

Girl Guide Nurul Wafa Hj Idris, 15, said that by participating, she felt more connected to the country, that she was part of something larger.

Major Idris OKMB Hj Osman, overall person-in-charge, said the youths were proud and keen to participate. They will become examples to others as "the uniform teaches discipline", he said.

Healers aim for a spotless and safe parade

A TOTAL of 125 medical teams from both Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (Ripas) Hospital and Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) were on standby yesterday during the parade for the 65th birthday celebration of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Two main temporary airconditioned emergency clinics had been set up by Ripas and RBAF and each of the tents were able to accommodate about 20 patients at a time.

Lt Pg Hjh Saliza Pg Hj Ibrahim, coordinator of the RBAF Medical Team, said that 53 military personnel were deployed.

Two ambulance cars were parked along Jln Pemancha near the RBAF's emergency clinic. Medical teams were also positioned beside the Royal Dais, she said, as well as four observers to monitor the sections inside the Taman. Other medical personnel were tasked to make their way around the marching contingents.

She said that the clinic was stocked with medical supplies, among other oropharyngeal airway or oral airway to maintain an open airway, intervenous fluids to treat dehydration and defibrillator to prevent a patient from going into complete cardiac arrest.

In a separate interview, Acting Senior Nursing Officer of Ripas Hospital's Accident and Emergency Department, Maraja Ulat, said that six ambulance cars were on standby on top of the three static clinics stationed at various locations outside the Taman. A total of 72 medical personnel were on duty during the event.

At the end of the parade, a total of 22 patients were treated at both clinics, 20 of whom were treated by the military medical personnel. They were reported to have suffered from heat stroke, dehydration and giddiness.

Forty-two members of the Red Crescent Association of the Tutong District branch received their promotion in a ceremony held at the Main Hall of Maahad Islam Brunei, Tutong.

The guest of honour was Assistant Director of Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent National Association, Hj Abu Bakar bin Abd Rahman.

During the ceremony, District Director of Tutong District branch, Hj Salleh bin Othman, officiated the promotion where 11 officers were promoted to commandant, nine officers to assistant commandant, three members to cadet, three members to probation officer, eight members to corporal and eight members to lance corporal.

Seramai 32 ahli persatuan telah menyertai istiadat tersebut yang mana diketuai oleh Yang Mulia Komandan Awang Mohammad Amirul Rizal bin Makmun selaku Ketua Pasukan dan dibantu oleh Yang Mulia Penolong Komandan Dayang Noorismawanty binti Haji Samaih selaku Penolong Ketua Pasukan.

Selain daripada itu, hampir 70 orang ahli lagi bertugas di khemah perubatan dan juga di sepanjang Jalan Tutong mulai dari jambatan berdekatan Balai Bomba & Penyelamat Bandar Seri Begawan menuju ke Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saiffudien di ibu negara.

Perkhidmatan pertolongan cemas pada kali ini turut disertai oleh ahli-ahli Pertubuhan Bulan Sabit Merah Negara Brunei Darussalam dari Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan yang telah ditubuhkan pada awal tahun ini.

Hadir sama ialah Pengerusi Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait, Awang Chai Yum Fatt yang telah dilantik sejak tahun lalu bagi sesi 2010 hingga 2012.

Semasa berucap Pegawai Daerah Belait, Awang Matussin berkata, Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait di bawah pimpinan Awang Chai Yum Fat telah banyak menampilkan diri bukan saja dalam skop sebagai sebuah persatuan yang membantu dalam sebarang kecemasan tetapi juga dilihatnya daripada skop lebih luas termasuk tampil memberikan bantuan kepada orang-orang daif di daerah ini.

Sehubungan itu, beliau berharap supaya usaha mereka itu akan tetap berterusan dan akan dapat dijadikan contoh yang baik kepada badan-badan bukan Kerajaan lainnya di daerah ini.

Selain itu, beliau menyeru kepada PBSM itu supaya akan sentiasa menghadirkan diri dan menyertai mana-mana aktiviti yang dianjurkan oleh badan-badan pertubuhan lain untuk memberikan sokongan mereka sebagai sebuah badan sukarelawan.

Antara mereka yang menerima dan ditauliahkan pangkat pada hari ini ialah Yong Kon Siew sebagai Bendahari cawangan, Yong Kiam Pin sebagai Pegawai Cawangan Kutipan Tabung, Lim Thiam Ming sebagai Ketua Cawangan Pembangunan Sosial dan Kemasyarakatan, Chiam Toon Kwang sebagai Juruaudit cawangan, Kok Per Mau sebagai Pegawai Media cawangan dan Dayang Chan Lai Miew sebagai Pegawai Kebudayaan cawangan.

Seven members of the Belait Red Crescent Association were promoted and received their certificates of appointment in a ceremony held at the Belait District Office yesterday afternoon.

The guest of honour who handed over the certificates was Belait District Officer Awg Matusin bin OKS Haji Tuba, who is Special Advisor to the Belait Red Crescent Association.

Also present at the event was the Association's Chairperson Chai Yum Fatt who was appointed to lead the association for the 2010-2012 session.

Awg Matusin said under the chairperson's leadership, he has presented activities beyond the association's scope to assist the community not only during emergencies but the association has also rendered assistance to underprivileged people in the district.

He praised the association for its continuous efforts and hoped it serves as an exemplary model to other non-governmental organisations in the district.

He also urged the association to participate in activities organised by government agencies to show their support.

Among those who were promoted were Yong Kon Siew as the President, Yong Kiam Pin as the Treasurer, Lim Thiam Ming as the Head of Social Development and Community, Chiam Toon Kwang as the Auditor, Kok Per Mau as the Media Officer and Chan Lai Miew as the Cultural Officer.

Their appointment is for the 2010-2012 session.

KUALA BELAIT, 28 Jun - Dua warga emas dan sebuah keluarga yang pada masa ini menerima Bantuan Kebajikan Bulanan Jabatan Pembangunan Masyarakat (JAPEM) cawangan Kuala Belait, mendapat sumbangan daripada Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah (PBSM) cawangan daerah ini, hari ini.

Sumbangan daripada PBSM itu merupakan kali kedua kepada golongan susah di Belait dan penyampainya disempurnakan Pengerusi PBSM Belait, Chai Yum Fatt.

Mereka yang menerima sumbangan berupa catuan makanan asas itu ialah Hajah Japun Haji Salim sebagai penerima pencen umur tua dari Kampung Sungai Taring Lumut, Ramlee Taha dari Seria yang merupakan penerima bantuan kebajikan bulanan JAPEM dan Cucu Taha, juga dari Seria, penerima pencen umur tua.

Majlis diadakan di Jabatan Pembangunan Masyarakat dekat sini. Ia antara lain bertujuan membantu mereka yang kurang berkemampuan supaya dapat menolong meringankan beban mereka.

Sumbangan itu juga merupakan antara aktiviti jangka panjang PBSM Belait dengan kerjasama JAPEM sebagai salah satu peranan bersama badan bukan kerajaan dan persatuan-persatuan berkaitan dalam membantu mereka yang kurang berkemampuan.

Turut hadir di majlis itu, Ketua Cawangan JAPEM Kuala Belait Noridah Haji Ishak.

Two senior citizens and a family currently receiving monthly welfare aid from the Community Development Department (JAPEM) in Kuala Belait, yesterday received contributions from the Red Crescent Society Association (PBSM) of the Belait District.

The contribution, in the form of food items, from PBSM is the second of such efforts to assist Belait folks faced with financial difficulties.

Belait District Red Crescent Society Association Chairperson Chai Yum Fatt handed over the contribution to senior citizens Hajah Japun binti Haji Salim from Kg Sg Taring Lumut and Cucu Taha from Seria, as well as Ramlee Taha from Seria during a ceremony held at the Community Development Department.

The move is part of long-term activities by PBSM (Belait District) in cooperation with JAPEM (Belait District), as one of the roles together with NGOs and relevant associations, in helping the less fortunate in the district.

Also present during the handover presentation were JAPEM (Kuala Belait) Head Noridah binti Haji Ishak, JAPEM officers, Red Crescent Society Association members and family members of the recipients.

Kursus Asas "Restoring Family Links" (RFL)

Kursus Asas "Restoring Family Links" (RFL) atau Pemulihan Pertalian Kekeluargaan hasil kerjasama antara Ibu Pejabat Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia (BSMM) dan Pejabat Serantau International Committee of Red Cross/Crescent (ICRC) di Kuala Lumpur telah dimantapkan lagi untuk Cawangan BSMM dengan beberapa lagi VCD dan nota latihan yang dialih bahasa ke Bahasa Malaysia. Usaha alih bahasa tersebut dibantu oleh Encik Misnan bin Kasan, Pengurus Bahagian Pembangunan Organisasi yang telah meluangkanmasa serta menyumbangkan suara beliau.

Sepanjang tahun 2008, enam Kursus Asas RFL telah diadakan untuk seramai 156 peserta. Ia juga telah melibatkan penyertaanempat peserta dari Bulan Sabit Merah Brunei Darussalam dari Cabang Belait.

RFL Basic Course

The RFL Basic Course was conducted with the collaboration between MRC National Headquarters and ICRC Regional Office in Kuala Lumpur. This course was further enhanced to the needs of MRC Branches where it was carried out in dual languages with VCDs and notes translated into Bahasa Malaysia. The narration and translation work were completed by Encik Misnan bin Kasan,
Manager Organisational Development.

Throughout 2008, six RFL courses were conducted with the participation of some 156 representatives including four from Belait Chapter of Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society.

BDRCS attends Commonwealth, Asia Pacific legal meetings in KL

The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) will be attending the Third Commonwealth Red Cross/Red Crescent International Humanitarian Law Conference and First Asia Pacific Legal Network (APLN) Meeting in Kuala Lumpur from today till Thursday, the society stated in a press release yesterday.

Pg Hjh Zabaidah binti Pg Hj Kamaluddin, the National Director of International Relations and Legal Adviser for the BDRCS was to leave yesterday for Kuala Lumpur to join the delegates of other international Red Cross/Red Crescent societies participating in the conference.

BRUNEI is joining other 24 countries world wide in the fourth international "Sukbel" (Youth Volunteers) 2011 Malaysian Red Crescent Youth Camp from May 28 till June 3, 2011 at the Kandis Camp, Bachok, Kelantan, Malaysia.

"We are sending 10 red crescent members to represent Brunei, it's an opportunity for us to encourage more youths in Brunei to join us and contribute to the nation," said Red Crescent Brunei-Muara District Director Hj Mohd Suhaimi Hj Ibrahim in an interview yesterday.

Brunei delegates consists of eight students from all four districts and two senior Red Crescent members as supervisors, will be leaving on Friday, May 27.

He said that by participating in the event, it provides a chance for Brunei's Red Crescent to come up with fresh new ideas for more programmes and activities that could prove to be useful to be implemented towards developing Brunei's younger generation to be more creative, proactive and innovative. "The ultimate goal for the gathering is to inspire the spirit of volunteerism, we want to continue the movement of the red crescent association in the nation," said Hj Mohd Suhaimi.

He said the meet consist of various tasks such as general presentation, radio communications, fire drill exercise, first-aid and community based disaster management and others.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies aimed to focus on the theme of the camp: "Satu Belia, Satu Sukarelawan" (loosely translated as One Youth, One Volunteer) in terms of youth involvement for which the camp provides opportunities for young Red Crescent members aged from 15 to 25 years of age to fully follow the programme since it's establishment in 2008. Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society's (BDRCS) programmes and activities have helped towards youth training in first aid, Red Cross Red Crescent fundamental principles and organising volunteers in camps.

Red Crescent Club attached to hospital

LAST term, the Belait Red Crescent Association organised a holiday project for all secondary schools' uniform groups — Red Crescent, Girl Guides and Scouts.

They were attached to the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital.

The objectives of the project are to encourage team work, impart nursing knowledge and create interest in the medical field.

St. John's School in Kuala Belait also participated in this event. They sent three of their Red Crescent members to be attached.

A five-day programme, members came in their uniform and the attachment start from 8am to 5pm everyday. The day before, they were briefed at the Lecture Hall of the hospital by the Red Crescent Officers. The participants were placed in ER, Record Room, Outpatient, Ward 3, 4, 10 and 11, Surgical Room, Day Center, Physical Room and Renal Room.

Brunei Red Crescent Society attends KL C'wealth conference

THE Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society will be leaving for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to attend the Third Commonwealth Red Cross/Red Crescent International Humanitarian Law Conference and First Asia Pacific Legal Network (APLN) meeting which commences June 6.

The National Director of International Relations and Legal Adviser for the society Pg Hjh Zabaidah Pg Hj Kamaluddin left yesterday to join other international red cross/red crescent societies who are also participating at the conference.

According to a press statement by the society, this year's conference will focus on several key topics which include "Laws in disaster: International Disaster Response Laws, Rules and Principles" as well as "Children associated to armed conflict:Guidelines for the Implementation of law protecting children in armed conflict".

Other issues include protection of the wounded and sick in armed conflict and other situations of violence and, role of Red Crescent Societies as auxiliaries to government authorities in the humanitarian field.

The event will end on June 9.

Brunei to host Red Crescent's regional training programme

THE Sultanate will be hosting the Red Crescent's training course for Asean countries next month, an official of the humanitarian group said.

In an interview, Brunei Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) Secretary-General Hj Julaini Hj Abdul Latif said that the Regional Disaster Response Team Refresher Training Course for Asean Countries would be held at the Sultanate's Asma Hotel from June 14 to 16.

The BDRCS is the Brunei chapter of the organisation that provides relief assistance on the principle of humanitarianism, which aims to prevent and alleviate human suffering, without any discrimination based on nationality, race, sex, religious beliefs, class or political opinions.

"It is a chance for Brunei to share with the 10 Asean nations and other participating countries about each other perspectives and experiences of being a volunteer aid group," said the secretary-general.

He added that Brunei was also inviting the Red Crescent members from Pakistan to talk about the experience about the massive Pakistani flood that inundated about one-fifth of the South Asian country's total land area in July last year following heavy monsoon rains.

"We will also share our knowledge and observation as one of the contributors for Brunei's National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC)," continued Hj Julaini.

Discussing International Red Crescent Day, which was observed worldwide last May 8, Hj Julaini said that it was the group's role "to provide humanitarian or volunteer aid in Brunei as well as overseas, as much as we can within our capacities".

The BDRCS hopes to further focus on promoting diversity, opposing discrimination, and joining in efforts to provide decent social services and to ensure that adequate protection, preventive health-care, education and disaster risk reduction measures are taken, he said.

"Most important of all is to enhance friendship and solidarity amongst the Red Crescent and Red Cross (societies) within the region," he added.

Among the group's activities to mark the occasion was a Charity expo held on May 8. The expo was aimed at encouraging Red Crescent unity.

The humanitarian society will also be sending some of its members to join the international "Sukbel" (Youth Volunteers) 2011 Malaysian Red Crescent Youth Camp from May 28 till June 3, 2011 at the Kandis Camp, Bachok, Kelantan, Malaysia to learn about radio communications, fire drills, first-aid and community-based disaster management.

The BDRCS was founded in 1948 and was formerly known as the Red Cross Society of Brunei (PPMNB). It was founded by the late Pg. Temenggong Sahibul Bahar Pg Hj Mohammed to support a decision of the Medical Conference in Cannes, France on May 5, 1918 that called for greater unity of the Red Cross and Red Crescent groups established throughout the world.

In 1977, the PPMNB, which was then under the supervision of the British Red Cross Society, was accepted as the 170th member at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

Following Brunei's independence in 1984, the BDRCS separated from the supervision of the British Red Cross. By 1991, the society was officially registered under the Section 83 (3) Organisations Act as a voluntary aid subject to the terms of the Geneva Convention.

The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Association will take part in the Red Crescent Association's Youth Voluntary Campaign in Kelantan, Malaysia starting tomorrow until June 3rd. The 10 member delegation left the country this afternoon.

Before departure, the National Flag was handed over by the Acting director of the Co-curriculum Education Department, Awang Haji Kassim bin Haji Mohd Yassin to the head of the Red Crescent Association delegation, Dayang Izat binti Haji Tuah. Also present was the President of Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Association, Datin Hajah Siti Hajar. The campaign program includes sharing experience on disaster mobilisation, understanding local culture, health, environmental and recreational activities, as well as a home stay program.

In an interview with RTB, the Secretary General of the Red Crescent Association, Awang Haji Julaini bin Haji Latif hoped that the International Red Crescent Jamboree organised by the Malaysia Red Crescent Association in Kelantan will further empower youth, inline with the government's policy. He said, such a campaign is important in further developing character building as the young generation will not only be the future leader of the association, but also Brunei Darussalam.

The campaign programme, jointly organised by the Asia Pacific Red Cross and Red Crescent, aims to further develop understanding and cooperation among members of the association in the region as well as to empower knowledge, experience, skills and opportunity to interact with their international colleagues.

Bandar Seri Begawan – Like any other Brunei non-government associations, the Brunei Red Crescents Society needs to plan education programs for their members such as equipping its members with knowledge and skills.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Dato Haji Awang Hussein, said this at the launching of the Flag-Sales Day in conjunction with the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day yesterday.

Red Crescents will carry out fund-raising activities by selling the flags in the form of stickers.The Brunei-Muara and Belait Districts’ flag sales will begin on June 14, while the Tutong and Temburong Districts’ will start on June 21.

As part of its initiative in raising humanitarian funds for floods, earthquake and tsunami victims, Persatuan Belia Kampong Lambak (PERBEKAL) has organised a charity sale. The charity sale was held at the parking area in front of Royal Regalia Building from May 28-29.

A launching ceremony was also held yesterday, which was officiated by Datin Hajah Adina binti Haji Othman, Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

After the launching ceremony, Datin Hjh Adina was then led to tour the stalls and interacted with some of the entrepreneurs who participated in the charity sale. A charity run will also be held today.

The Fire and Rescue Department and Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society also participated in the two-day event.

Some 40 stalls were set up for the charity sale, which opens from 9am until 10pm. Aside from that, side activities were also arranged such as street soccer, treasure hunt, quiz, karaoke and cultural night.

Car and motorcycle exhibitions by a group of youth also took place at the event.

Members of the public are invited to come to the charity event and make some donations.

PBSM Belait sumbang makanan kepada yang memerlukan

KUALA BELAIT, 29 Mei - Atas dasar pemedulian terhadap mereka yang kurang berkemampuan di Daerah Belait, Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah (PBSM) cawangan Daerah Belait menghulurkan sumbangan kepada seorang warga emas dan dua buah keluarga yang pada masa ini menerima Bantuan Kebajikan Bulanan (BKB) daripada Jabatan Pembangunan Masyarakat (JAPEM) cawangan Kuala Belait.

Sumbangan tersebut, yang berupa catuan makanan asasi disampaikan oleh Pengerusi PBSM cawangan Daerah Belait Awang Chai Yum Fatt pada majlis yang diadakan di JAPEM dekat sini. Sumbangan itu merupakan salah satu aktiviti jangka masa panjang yang dilaksanakan oleh persatuan berkenaan dengan kerjasama JAPEM cawangan Belait.

Penerima sumbangan ialah Tang Siak Nang, 60, seorang penerima pencen umur tua, manakala Awang Omar Ahmad, 53, yang bekerja sendiri dan tinggal bersama-sama dengan tujuh orang anaknya yang semuanya masih bersekolah. Beliau menerima bantuan kebajikan berupa elaun pelajaran berjumlah $60 bagi setiap seorang anak. Bantuan tersebut adalah bagi anak-anak yang berusia 18 tahun ke bawah dan masih bersekolah. Sementara itu penerima lainnya Awang Asmalee Haji Saidon, 49, tidak mempunyai pekerjaan tetap dan isterinya Noryati Japar, 50, suri rumah tangga sepenuhnya yang tinggal bersama-sama dengan enam orang anak mereka di Perumahan Rakyat Jati Kampung Mumong sejak 1996. Kesemua anak mereka masih bersekolah.

Bagi menyara kehidupannya sekeluarga Awang Asmalee mengambil upah memotong rumput bersama saudaranya, selain turut menerima bantuan kebajikan bulanan berupa elaun pelajaran untuk anak-anak.

Sumbangan kali pertama itu antara lain bertujuan untuk meringankan beban orang-orang kurang berkemampuan selain sebagai sikap keprihatinan serta pemedulian persatuan bukan kerajaan NGO dan pihak-pihak berkenaan terhadap mereka yang kurang berkemampuan dan memerlukan bantuan di daerah ini. Turut hadir menyaksikan majlis penyampaian sumbangan itu Ketua Cawangan JAPEM Kuala Belait Dayang Noridah Haji Ishak serta pegawai-pegawai JAPEM dan ahli-ahli PBSM.

Belait Red Crescent Association contributes to less fortunate

To care for the interest of the less fortunate people in the Sultanate, the Belait Red Crescent Association yesterday morning made a contribution to families and individuals currently receiving welfare assistance from Community Development Department (JAPEM).

The presentation to a senior citizen and two underprivileged families was held at JAPEM's office in Kuala Belait.

The presentation of daily food supplies and necessities were made by Chairman of Belait Red Crescent Association, Chai Yum Fatt. Also present to witness the contribution was Head of Belait's JAPEM, Dyg Noridah binte Haji Ishak, JAPEM officers and members of the Belait Red Crescent Association.

The Chairman said the contribution hopes to ease the burden of less fortunate people in the district and the association will boost community works in a bid to create awareness among its youth members.

Kuala Belait - Members of the public flocked the Seria Plaza yesterday morning to witness the Belait District Red Crescent Society (PBSMBDCDB) commemorate Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

They saw an exhibition on the PBSMBDCDB's development, and underwent free check-up for high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other diseases.

The free health check-up was carried out the day before at Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College, it was learned.

Chief Guest yesterday morning was the Managing Director of Adinin Company, Haji Adinin bin Pehin Dato Hj Ibrahim, a former PBSMBDCDB director.

The Chairman, Hjh Suryani binte Mohd Sani, and acting PBSMBDCDB commandant, in her welcoming remarks touched on the history of the setting up of the Red Crescent Association in 1984.

She said one of its objectives is to organise an open association with no discrimination on religion, race, skin colour or politics.

PBSMBDCDB had organised various activities, she said. Emergency assistance is its main task, which is consistently carried out in the district. Side activities like having an operational room for natural disasters and fire occurrences are also executed, she noted.

She urged youths to carry out beneficial tasks for community development, be dedicated, knowledgeable, religious, creative and fully responsible, by joining uniform associations and clubs and avoid getting into social problems.

Meanwhile, chief guest Haji Adinin praised the PBSMBDCDB as one of the active associations. Last year, it received a brilliant award for the project category.

He expressed pride on officials under his guidance while he was the district director of the association.

They are still actively carrying out first aid and voluntary tasks.

The celebration was enlivened by the singing of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent official song by PBSMBDCDB officials and members.

Motivasional Camp For Kg Sungai Teraban Youths

Kuala Belait - About 20 youths from Kampong Sungai Teraban Kuala Belait joined a three-day motivational camp which kicked off yesterday morning.

The camp is organised by Youth Bureau, Kg Sungai Teraban Consultative Council to mark the 27th National Day celebration. It is also conducted for the youths to fill their school holidays with positive activities.

It is an annual camp open for youths residing in the village.

The guest of honour who officiated the camp was Penghulu of Mukim Belait, Awg Haji Pungut bin Ali.

The event was launched with the hoisting of national flag and welcoming remarks by Village Head Kg Sungai Teraban, Awg Mohd Mersidi bin Hj Mohd Shara.

On the first day of the camp yesterday, youths were given a chance to learn about the economic activities of the Women's Bureau and they were also given basic first-aid training by the Belait Red Crescent Association.

Today, the youths will perform mass Friday prayers, followed by attending a religious talk at Kg Sungai Teraban Mosque.

Tomorrow, the participants will have a sharing session chaired by Cikgu Hajah Harinah binte Hj Mohd Shara, followed by listening to a talk on the misuse of drugs from the Narcotics Control Bureau.

The camp will end with a talk delivered by a firefighter from Operation 13' Fire and Rescue Department.

Goodwill Visit Of Singapore Red Cross

Bandar Seri Begawan - In line with a youth exchange programme, a 10- member group from the Singapore Red Cross Society will be in the country for an educational and goodwill tour.

The programme was initiated during the visit made by senior officers from Singapore Red Cross Society in September last year.

This was disclosed in a press release from the organising committee of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society.

The Singapore Red Cross Society is initiating the first visit to the Sultanate - the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society will follow up with a visit to Singapore next year.

Various activities have been lined up during their stay in Brunei, including visits to the four divisions of Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society.

The visit programme will also include community service project, which will be undertaken by the society's Temburong Division.

The press release said that the visitors' stay in Brunei Darussalam will benefit them by enhancing their international cooperation skills and knowledge for exchanging, sharing and training programmes.

"Most important of all is to enhance friendship and solidarity amongst the Red Crescent and Red Cross (societies) within the region," said the press release.

Brunei Approves National Youth Policy

Bandar Seri Begawan – A national youth policy has been approved to create a physical network infrastructure and protect the youths all over Brunei.

Pehin Dato Dr Haji Awang Hussain, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, disclosed this new policy at the award presentation for the Outstanding Youth Association 2004 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas yesterday.

He said its ministry is currently and will continuously hold programmes which directly involve youths to develop their spirit and self-esteem.

The minister further said that today’s youth has to face several major challenges, particularly social problems.

During the function, he presented the awards in three different categories. These are the management category, economic category and project category.

The Tanjong Maya Association, PERTAMA from the Tutong District. Management category won the management category.

The Economic category, however, went to Tiga Kampong Bersatu Association, TIBA from the Brunei-Muara District.

Meanwhile, the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Association from the Belait District won for the project category.

The award was to acknowledge youth associations, which showed continuous excellent performances in the aspect of management and administration and in implementing activities and projects in the field of economic, community and religion.

Singapore Red Cross Heads Home Today

Bandar Seri Begawan - Two Singapore Red Cross officials yesterday paid a courtesy call to V P Hirubalan, Singapore High Commissioner to Brunei, at the Singapore High Commission in Subok.

Madam Norshana, who heads a nine-member delegation, arrived in the Sultanate Dec 6 for the first 'Youth Exchange Programme Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society and Singapore Red Cross' that unfolded here days earlier.

During the courtesy call, Madam Norshana spoke of the programme's objective, describing it as a bilateral exchange for the Singapore Red Cross students to partake in and notably gain experience through interactions with their Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society counterparts.

So far, the visiting Singapore Red Cross members have met with the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society in all four districts. They visited places of interest in the capital and participated in community service projects.

The Singapore Red Cross and Temburong division of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society jointly organized the projects.

On community service, Madam Norshana illustrated the good relations between the two delegations, where she observed excellent co-operations between them.

The Singapore High Commissioner also noted that in observing the close ties between Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, the exchange programme served as evidence of the long existing relationship between the two countries at all levels.

The Singapore High Commissioner placed high hopes that the exchange programme be continued in the future, where he wishes to see the two sides working together on a large-scale project such as community works in third world countries.

The Singapore Red Cross delegation was also feted to a farewell dinner hosted by the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society last night.

In addition, the night saw cultural performances delivered by members of the Singapore Red Cross as well as Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society members from all four divisions.

The Singapore Red Cross delegation will leave the Sultanate today.

Brunei Darussalam yesterday hosted the 3rd Southeast Asia Disaster Management Cooperation Meeting for the first time, ever since the country became a member of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 1997.

The 3rd Southeast Asia Disaster Management Cooperation Meeting was held in SEAMEO VOCTECH and ends on Feb 22. The meeting is organised by the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and in the sultanate, and is hosted by the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society.

"This third meeting in Brunei, is an important step to put idea into action. Participants will share experiences in preparing for and response to disasters, exchange views on various ways and tools in disaster management, and identify areas and activities to work as a regional network," a statement said.

The meeting is attended by 19 participants from nine Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies in the region and representatives of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

This 3rd Southeast Asia Disaster Management Cooperation Meeting was officially opened yesterday morning by Yusof Amba, Acting Director of RIPAS Hospital. In his welcoming speech, he said, "Member countries of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have been taking turns in hosting the Southeast Asia Disaster Management Cooperation Meeting since 1997. And this year, the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society in particular and the people of Brunei are indeed fortunate and honoured to have this opportunity to host the 3rd such meeting for the first time in the country".

He also said, "The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society was formally accepted as a full member of the 170th International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies since 1997. Since then, the society had benefited immensely in terms of upgrading the knowledge and skills of its members in the preparations and responses to disasters, be it natural or man-made.

"Brunei Darussalam as you know, is one of the most serene and peaceful countries in the South-east Asian region. We are indeed blessed and very fortunate that almost none of the natural disasters that struck other countries such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, typhoons, hurricanes and the likes are ever experienced by our country, apart from occasional incidents, like monsoonal floods in some areas of the country."

He added, "However, we should not be too complacent because disasters can happen at any place and time. If it is not a natural disaster, it can be man-made and can be due to human errors such as air crashes, oilfield blowouts, maritime accidents and the like.

"Thus, an organisation such as the Red Crescent in Brunei Darussalam is a potentially useful resource as a first line of support for example in terms of First Aid and Basic Life Support in times of need; whether it is in helping the Ministry of Health's medical support team during ceremonial functions which involves big crowds or events with the potential for disaster. The close cooperation between the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society and the Ministry of Health has existed for many years in numerous aspects of medical support including all exercises for major disasters planned by the ministry. In this respect, they are indeed indispensable as a supplier of skillfully-trained and dedicated volunteers in times when we need extra pair of hands to support us".

The chief guest also hoped that "the meeting will bring closer cooperation in disaster management and establish a strong regional network for the sharing of experiences and the exchange of information and tools as well as identifying working areas and activities in disaster management".

Red Crescent Association held certificate presentation

It is a wise and good choice to be involved in charity or voluntary works by participating in any organisation or association such as a uniformed association.

A good choice would be the Red Crescent Association, an association providing emergency services to those in need.

This afternoon, many students enrolled as new members of the association.

The membership certificates presentation ceremony was held at the hall of the Dato Marsal Perpindahan Lambak Kanan Primary School.

Presenting the certificates was the Assistant Director for Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education, Awang Roslin Bin Suhaili.

One hundred and fifty-five students from 14 Secondary schools and colleges as well as Primary Schools in the Brunei Muara District registered as new members, this year.

The Seri Begawan Religious Teachers' University College joined the association for the first time.

New Toyota Car For Red Crescent Society

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society was presented a brand new Toyota Kijang, courtesy of local car dealer NBT (B) Sdn Bhd, yesterday.

On hand to receive the mock key from Ninan Chacko, NBT's Managing Director, was Pehin Dato (Dr) Awang Hj Hussein, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, in his capacity as the President of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society.

Shortly after, the minister handed the contribution to Awang Hj Othman, the National Director cum Branch Director of the Brunei-Muara District Red Crescent Society.

Held at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports building, the event later saw the sprinkling of 'Bunga Rampai' on the car.

The vehicle will be utilised for activities in rendering their assistance during emergencies, or any particular event that requires their services.

St. George's School is currently hosting the Red Crescent Society Training for its 2005 intake in the Brunei-Muara District. The 5-day training programme is attended by students from various schools - Maktab Sains, SM Sayyidina Hassan, SM Sayyidina Abu Bakar, Sekolah Menengah Jamalul Alam, SM SOAS, SM Berakas and St George's School. Hj Othman Md Yusoff, the pengarah, discussed the details of their activities with the school Principal, Hjh Haziah DP Hj Abu Zar and the teachers-in-charge.

The officials and senior members of the society conducted the lecture, first aid and marching practices. The training programme is aimed at developing the spirit of volunteerism, civic consciousness and service orientation among the young members of our society.

THE Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society is seeking more skilled people from various backgrounds to support its humanitarian programmes.

Brunei Red Crescent Society Commandant Safinah Hj Othman said the non-governmental organisation wants to attract more members and volunteers, not only students, but also government and private employees.

On the last day of Humanitarian Charity Expo and Carnival which took place at the car park of the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, she said that they need members who have different skills, such as in the construction and advertising sectors..

She said the Red Crescent Society needs to expand its members and volunteers in conducting humanitarian activities such as repairing houses, helping the poor, and carrying out charity bazaar events.

Volunteers in the Red Crescent Society, she added, will be accommodated in its Voluntary Aid Division (VAD), a non-uniform unit in the Society. "Volunteers can join VAD when any humanitarian project takes place," she said, adding that the volunteers are not required to be registered members of the organisation.

"We also hope that people will support us financially so we can continue to keep on giving to the community. Funds assistance is really hard to find right now, but we are trying all our efforts," she said.

The Brunei Red Crescent Society, which has over 1,000 members, has branches in all four of the Sultanate's districts.

Among other activities of the NGO are community work, visiting villages, conducting volunteer activities at hospitals, and house training courses.

The seven-day Humanitarian Charity Expo and Carnival and one-day Charity Walk, ,which took place yesterday marked the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, which falls on the same day.

The events were launched on May 2 by Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Halbi Hj Md Yussof.

Some 500 participants came to enliven the activities throughout the bazaar, said Safinah.

Themed "The Chain of Humanity", the events aimed to show that the association is actively serving the community.

The funds from the Charity Bazaar will be handed over to the Centre for Children with Special Needs (Kaca), Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind (BDNAB) and orphans.

Side activities at the bazaar included performances by local artistes, vendors selling food and goods, colouring contest for children, flying fox, modified car show, and a car sound system exhibition.

MORE than 200 people took part in the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) humanitarian charity walk yesterday to mark the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2011.

Themed "The Chain of Humanity", the charity walk was aimed to raise funds for the BDRCS and other non-government organisations, as well as make known to the public that the association always care about the community and always prepare to serve them.

Present as the guest of honour at the event was, the deputy minister of culture, youth and sports, Datin Hjh Adina Othman.

In her welcoming remarks, BDRCS President Datin Hjh Siti Hajar Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yusof said that through the humanitarian charity walk the BDRCS would be able to raise money which were needed to continue carrying out charity and community work.

She added that the event was to give members of the BDRCS the opportunity to improve teamwork and cooperation among themselves as well as learn about issues related to "fund-raising".

Datin Hjh Siti Hajar pointed out that it was the main responsibility of the BDRCS to upgrade the skills of its members in the field of disaster preparedness and management, first aid as well as charity and community works.

She said that part of the proceeds from the charity event will be donated to the Brunei Muara Orphans Fund, the Centre for Children with Special Needs (Kaca) and the Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind (BDNAB).

The event started with a warm-up exercise and aerobic session.

The charity walk was divided into two groups men and women. The men's group walked a distance of 4km , while the women walked a distance of 3km which started and ended at the Pedestrian Mall at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.The Brunei Times

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 8 Mei - The Chain of Community dipilih sebagai tema bagi acara Humanitarian Charity Walk anjuran Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Negara Brunei Darussalam kali ini untuk meningkatkan semangat sukarelawan dan sedia membantu di kalangan belia dalam usaha membangunkan modal insan di negara ini.

Demikian antara inti pati ucapan yang disampaikan oleh Presiden Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Negara Brunei Darussalam Datin Dayang Hajah Siti Hajar Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yusof pada acara yang berlangsung di Kawasan Dewan Serbaguna dan Bangunan Squash, Kompleks Sukan Negara Hassanal Bolkiah, Berakas pagi ini.

Menurut beliau tenaga belia amat diperlukan dalam kegiatan sukarelawan yang mahu diterap dan wajar dijadikan amalan di kalangan golongan itu.

Walaupun ia merupakan satu persatuan Bukan Kerajaan (NGO) dan tidak menjanjikan sebarang insentif berbentuk wang ringgit atau pangkat tetapi persatuan tetap bergerak dan memberi manfaat besar kepada masyarakat, katanya.

Humanitarian Charity Walk 2011 merupakan antara projek yang dirancang bagi kalendar 2011/2012 selain pelbagai lagi aktiviti kebajikan dan projek amal atau kemanusiaan.

Dalam ucapannya itu juga beliau berkata hari ini merupakan hari yang istimewa, khususnya buat ahli persatuan itu di negara ini dan juga di seluruh dunia yang sama-sama meraikan Sambutan Hari Palang Merah Sedunia.

8 Mei dipilih sebagai Hari Palang Merah Sedunia sempena tarikh lahir Henry Dunant, insan pertama yang mengasaskan persatuan palang merah dan memperkenalkan kepada dunia dengan usaha-usaha berterusan penubuhan badan kemanusiaan ini, demikian menurut Presiden Bulan Sabit Merah NBD.

Sebagai meraikan hari istimewa ini pelbagai acara disusun sepanjang hari ini yang dihasratkan untuk menambah sumber kewangan persatuan bagi membolehkannya mengendalikan aktiviti amal dan kemasyarakatan, seterusnya melaksanakan sebarang keperluan persediaan menambah baik keupayaan bagi memenuhi komitmen setempat dan juga di peringkat serantau dan antarabangsa.

Selain itu penganjuran aktiviti seperti ini juga mampu menyemai semangat setia kawan dan kerja berpasukan selain mempelajari pelbagai isu berhubungan kutipan amal, yang akan dikendalikan dari semasa ke semasa.

Menurut Datin Dayang Hajah Siti Hajar lagi sebanyak lima peratus daripada hasil kutipan dari Humanitarian Charity Walk 2011 masing-masing akan disalurkan kepada tiga badan bukan kerajaan, Pusat Persatuan Kanak-kanak Cacat, Persatuan Orang-orang Buta Kebangsaan dan Tabung Anak-anak Yatim Daerah Brunei dan Muara.

Turut hadir dan menyertai acara berjalan kaki ini selaku tetamu kehormat Pemangku Menteri Kebudayaan Belia dan Sukan Datin Dayang Hajah Adina Othman, Pemangku Pengarah Cawangan Daerah Brunei dan Muara, Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah NBD Awang Hj Mohd Suhaimi Haji Ibrahim, selaku Pengerusi Humanitarian Charity Walk 2011.

Lebih 150 orang peserta terdiri daripada ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah NBD, ahli keluarga, jemputan khas dari Kementerian Kesihatan, ahli badan-badan NGO perseorangan, dan ahli jawatankuasa Humanitarian Charity Walk 2011.

Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) organised a Humanitarian Charity Walk at the Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex yesterday morning. The charity walk was held in conjunction with the World Red Crescent Day, which is celebrated every May 8.

The guest of honour was Datin Hjh Adina binti Hj Othman, Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The charity walk was aimed at raising funds for BDRCS and also to expose the organisation to members of the public that the society has done some humanitarian work and provided aid for the needy people aside from first aid and medical treatments.

The walk began with a warm-up session followed by the guest of honour officiating the humanitarian walk. Male participants covered four kilometres while female participants covered three kilometres.

Over 100 participants joined the walk including youth association and non-government organisations as well as members of BDRCS from the four districts.

BDRCS is the 170th member of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Society.

Aside from raising funds, BDRCS also gave an opportunity to its members to enhance a spirit of unity and solidarity and the ability to work in a team and to learn related issues on fund-raising.

Proceeds from the charity walk will also go to Brunei-Muara Orphan Fund, centre for children with special needs (KACA) and Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind (BDNAB).

BDRCS is also organising the Humanitarian Charity Expo and Carnival, which commenced on May 2.

Hari Bendera ialah hari ulangtahun penubuhan Persatuan Palang Merah dan Bulan Sabit Merah Antarabangsa yang jatuh pada 8 Mei setiap tahun. Lazimnya, nama Hari Bendera ini hanya digunakan oleh 2 persatuan iaitu Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Negara Brunei Darussalam (PBSM NBD) dan Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia (PBSMM). Nama yang digunakan oleh persatuan-persatuan selain dari dua persatuan ini ialah Hari Bulan Sabit Merah (Red Crescent Day) dan Hari Persatuan Palang Merah dan Bulan Sabit Merah Antarabangsa (International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day).

Kenapa tarikh 8 Mei itu dipilih?

Tarikh 8 Mei dipilih sebagai Hari Bendera kerana memperingati hari kelahiran pengasas, perintis dan pelopor persatuan ini iaitu Sir Jean Henri Dunant (atau Jean Henry Dunant). TEMBURONG, Selasa, 3 Mei. - Seramai 30 peserta yang menamatkan Kursus Pertolongan Kecemasan menerima sijil masing-masing pada Majlis Penyampaian Sijil berlangsung di Dewan Belalong, Kompleks Dewan Kemasyarakatan Pekan Bangar, di sini.

Penyampaian sijil bagi kursus tiga hari itu disempurnakan oleh Pemangku Pegawai Daerah Temburong, Awang Haji Haris bin Othman.

Selama kursus yang diadakan sejak 30 April lalu, para peserta didedahkan dengan beberapa demonstrasi dan latihan amali tatacara pertolongan kecemasan seperti membalut kecederaan, menyelamatkan seseorang tercekik dan posisi pemulihan.

Selain itu mereka juga mendengarkan ceramah tentang sistem pernafasan, penyebab saluran pernafasan tersumbat dan tindakannya, kecemasan perubatan dan kecemasan persekitaran.

Kursus antara lain bertujuan untuk memberikan pengetahuan tentang cara-cara pengendalian pertolongan kecemasan serta kaedah dan cara rawatan CPR yang lebih bersistematik yang dapat diaplikasikan kepada orang ramai terutamanya para penduduk kampung pedalaman.

Ekspo selama seminggu yang bermula hari ini sehingga 8 Mei 2011 itu merupakan salah satu projek yang dirancang sebagai kegiatan Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Brunei bagi tahun 2011/2012.

Petang tadi, Majlis Perasmian Ekspo dan Karnival ini telah disempurnakan oleh Timbalan Menteri Hal Ehwal Dalam Negeri, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Lailaraja Mejar Jeneral (B) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd. Yussof.

Dalam ucapan alu-aluannya, Pemangku Pengarah Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Daerah Brunei Muara, Awang Haji Md. Suhaimi Haji Ibrahim menjelaskan, ekspo antara lain dihasratkan untuk meningkatkan sumber kewangan bagi membolehkan persatuan itu membuat kegiatan-kegiatan kemasyarakatan seterusnya dan membiayai apa jua keperluan persediaan peningkatan keupayaannya bagi memenuhi komitmen setempat dan di peringkat serantau dan antarabangsa.

Di samping itu tambahnya, ia juga memberi peluang kepada ahli-ahli persatuan untuk meningkatkan semangat usaha padu dan setia kawan serta kebolehan bekerja secara berpasukan, meningkatkan kemahiran kepimpinan dan pengurusan selain mempelajari isu-isu yang berhubung dengan 'fund-raising' dan keusahawanan.

Ekspo dan Karnival Amal ini jelasnya dibahagikan kepada lima segmen iaitu pameran, ekspo jualan, bazar jualan, permainan dan hiburan dan segmen-segmen ini pula menjurus kepada empat perspektif iaitu keagamaan dan nasionalisma, peningkatan tabung kewangan, perkembangan sumber tenaga dan hiburan.

Di majlis tersebut, Yang Dimuliakan juga dibawa menyaksikan pameran dan bazar-bazar jualan yang terlibat di ekspo tersebut.

THE Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society yesterday launched its "Humanitarian Charity Walk" and "Humanitarian Charity Expo and Carnival" to celebrate the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day yesterday.

Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Halbi Hj Md Yussof launched the two events at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Indoor Stadium.

Themed "The Chain of Humanity", the events aimed to show that the association is about serving the community, said Acting Director of the Red Crescent Society in Brunei-Muara District Hj Mohd Suhaimi Hj Ibrahim

Hj Mohd Suhaimi said the celebrations would last for at least a week, starting from yesterday.

The expo and the walkathon was hoped to improve the non-governmental organisation's funding so that the society could continue organising community service activities.

"It's also a chance to strengthen ties between the community and the association, especially in improving our leadership and management skills," said Hj Mohd Suhaimi.

He explained that it also gives a chance for younger members of the red crescent group to study issues relating to fundraising and entrepreneurship.

"The commitment to extend humanitarian assistance is not limited to the needs of the country, but also includes international assistance when needed, especially being prepared in the field of disaster management," said Hj Mohd Suhaimi.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 2 Mei - Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Negara Brunei Darussalam hari ini menganjurkan Ekspo & Karnival Amal Kemanusiaan serta Jalan Amal Kemanusiaan 2011 yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan sumber kewangan persatuan itu.

Menurut Pemangku Pengarah Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Daerah Brunei Muara Haji Mohd Suhaimi Haji Ibrahim ia bertujuan untuk membolehkan persatuan menjalani pelbagai program kemasyarakatan bagi memenuhi komitmen bantuan yang mahu diberikan meliputi keperluan bantuan di peringkat serantau dan antarabangsa.

Beliau dalam ucapan alu-aluannya berkata sebagai sebuah persatuan bukan kerajaan yang komited dalam sentiasa bersedia menyumbangkan tenaga dan menghulurkan bantuan khidmat kemanusiaan PBSM negara ini bukan sahaja terhad kepada bentuk bantuan dalam negara malah jika diperlukan oleh pihak International Federation of Red Cross dan Red Crescent Socities (IRFC).

Oleh itu itu katanya adalah amat penting bagi persatuan untuk meningkatkan keupayaan ahli-ahlinya dalam bidang persediaan dan pengurusan bencana, pertolongan cemas serta kegiatan-kegiatan kebajikan dan kemasyarakatan.

Haji Mohd Suhaimi berkata demikian di Perasmian Ekspo & Karnival Amal Kemanusiaan 2011.

Menurutnya program yang dikendalikan selama seminggu bermula hari ini sehingga 8 Mei adalah salah satu projek yang dirancang oleh persatuan bagi tahun 2011/2012 sebagai salah satu aktiviti sempena Hari Bulan Sabit Merah Sedunia yang jatuh pada 8 Mei.

Hadir merasmikan ekspo dan karnival ialah Timbalan Menteri Hal Ehwal Dalam Negeri Pehin Datu Lailaraja Mejar Jeneral (B) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Halbi Haji Mohd Yussof. Majlis berlangsung di Kawasan Letak Kereta, Stadium Tertutup Kompleks Sukan Negara Hassanal Bolkiah.

Ekspo dan karnival itu juga dihasratkan untuk meningkatkan sumber kewangan persatuan bagi membiayai keperluan persediaan peningkatan keupayaan ahli, memberi peluang kepada mereka untuk meningkatkan semangat setia kawan dan kebolehan bekerja secara berpasukan serta meningkatkan kemahiran kepimpinan dan pengurusan.

Ia dibuka kepada orang ramai dari jam 9:30 pagi hingga 10:30 malam.

Pelbagai program diatur sepanjang ekspo tersebut.

In conjunction with the World Red Crescent Day, the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Association (PBSMNBD) yesterday launched the Humanitarian Charity Expo and Carnival 2011 at the Indoor Stadium (car park) in Berakas.

Present to officiate the launch was Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.

Also present during the launch was Datin Hjh Siti Hajar binti Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Md Yussof, President of PBSMNBD together with top officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Red Crescent members.

Carrying the theme, 'The Chain of Humanity', the weeklong expo and carnival promises to be a one-stop shopping avenue and entertainment, and at the same time being courteous to victims of humanitarian crisis.

According to the Acting Director of PBSMNBD, Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Ibrahim, the event is based on four main issues: Nation Building and Patriotism, Fund Raising Activities, Capacity Building and Entertainment.

He added that for the convenience of visitors, the layout of the event is divided into five main segments namely, Sales Expo, Bazaar Sales, Exhibition, Games and Entertainment.

Among the objectives of the event is to encourage members of PBSMNBD, including youths, to be involved in humanitarian and charitable causes in the Sultanate. The event is also hoped to raise funds for the victims of recent disasters in the region.

One of the highlights of the event is the Humanitarian Charity Walk 2011 that will be held this Friday, May 8, which is still open for registration.

The Charity Walk is divided into four categories - VIP/Guests, Male, Female and Special Needs. VIP/Guests and Male participants will walk four kilometres whereas Female and Special Needs will walk three kilometres.

Some 500 participants are scheduled to join the walkathon, consisting of individuals from PBSM in all four districts, youth associations and NGOs, students, sponsors and members of the public.

Scheduled to lead the participants on the walkathon is the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah.

The handing over ceremony of all the monies raised during the weeklong event will be held at a later date.

The Humanitarian Charity Expo and Carnival 2011 will run until May 8, from 9.30am to 10.30pm daily.

THE Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) took a step forward in their effort to strengthen their ties with the education sector through a discussion session with the participating teachers of the recent training workshop.

A collaborative effort with the Department of Co-Curriculum Education, the association conducted yesterday's discussion session as a follow up of the training workshop held for teachers from participating schools.

Acting District Director for Brunei-Muara Hj Muhammad Suhaimi Hj Ibrahim in an interview elaborated that this was the association's initiative in hearing out what the teachers have encountered within a three to four week gap after the training workshop which covered the basics of first aid and humanitarian activities.

"Why it took us another three to four weeks to conduct such as session is because after the workshop, the teachers returned to their respective schools where they will introduce and educate the administration about the (BDRCS) involvement, role and suggest suitable activities to be held at each school," he said. "This session is also to listen to their feedback for problems that may have arose on their side and other difficulties that they have encountered as well as share ideas and suggestions that may help in the future."

Also present during the session were Hj Julaini Hj Latip, secretary general of BDRCS, who presented a talk on the history of the Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies around the world and acting director of the Co-Curriculum Education Department, Hj Kassim Mohammad Yasin, who gave the opening remarks.

STUDENTS from the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (Kupu SB) concluded the two-day display of their co-curricular activities yesterday.

The closing ceremony was highlighted by marching drills by the Red Crescent and Fire and Rescue cadets, followed by a series of performances by the various co-curriculum groups to display what they have learned through participation.

The Fire and Rescue cadets demonstrated how to handle a fire hose and extinguishers, student volunteers from the Red Crescent displayed various first aid techniques while the volunteers Kupu SB produced a play to emphasise the importance of charity and prayer.

Watching the demonstrations was the guest of honour, Dr Ustazah Hjh Masnon Hj Ibrahim, Raes of Kupu SB.

As the events celebrating the conclusion of co-curricular activities for the semester came to a close, Kupu SB students, who aim to one day become religious teachers, spoke to The Brunei Times about how the activities impact them and the importance of the skills they have learned as future teachers.

Hj Mohd Jaya Hj Metussin, First Year Student at Kupu SB, who is also a teacher-in-service trainee said that his time spent doing co-curricular activities as a Fire and Rescue cadet would be helpful in the case of a fire that happens in school. "With the skills we have learned, it could help keep a small fire under control until the authorities come to deal with it," he said. He also said that they have learned various aspects of safety that would be useful to have and practice.

"When I return to being a teacher, I would also encourage my students to take part in co-curricular activities," he said, especially activities such as being Bomba cadets or any other activities in uniform.

"The uniforms teach you discipline, which is something I have learned," he said, also stating that it was something he was proud to be part of.

Noraseykin Raya, a Red Crescent volunteer, said that the skills gained during her training as a member of a Red Crescent were difficult, but enjoyable.

"I joined because I wanted to do first aid," she said.

She said the skills she learned would be useful in emergency situations in schools, and she would be able to help students if they had injuries.

Siti Salwa Hj Jakir, member of the volunteering group and a first-year student at Kupu SB was proud to be part of the Kupu SB's volunteer. Like other co-curricular groups, she highlighted the teamwork and bonds of friendships they formed.

"We have also made friends with the people we had helped," she said.

She and other volunteers of Kupu SB had set aside every Saturday for volunteer work, and have joined cleaning campaigns and even helped out farmers to harvest padi. "It's a good experience, and I would definitely try to encourage students to take part."

A HUMANITARIAN charity expo, carnival and charity walk are set to take place at the car park located at the National Indoor Stadium on May 2 to 8, to mark Red Crescent Society's National Day 2011.

Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society's Commandant Safinah Hj Othman said the expo and carnival will take place from May 2 to 8, starting from 9.30am to 10.30pm, while the charity walk will be held on May 8 at 7am at the Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex.

"This is the first charity bazaar we have done in so many years. The funds will go to our association, Centre for Children with Special Needs (Kaca), Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind (BDNAB) and orphans," she told The Brunei Times on the sidelines of a press conference held at the Youth Centre yesterday.

She explained that the charity bazaar was about the society getting along with the community, as they have been "quiet for some time".

"A lot of people will be involved, including local artists and vendors who will be selling food and other items," she said.

Safinah called on more vendors to come and participate in their bazaar, saying it was a way for them to contribute to the association and to other charities.

Mohd Amirulrizal Makmun, another commandant of the society said, "This charity is for us to raise funds because we need new equipment and medical supplies for us to give to society. We also want to expose our society to Bruneians, and let them know we are not just about providing medical cover, but we are doing humanitarian works such as providing aid for needy people."

A press statement said the expo and carnival will comprise five segments: an expo, bazaar, exhibition, games and entertainment.

Some 500 participants are expected to take part in the walkathon. The public, sponsors, students, the Youth Association and Non-Government Organisations as well as members of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society at four districts are invited to join, the statement added.

The walkathon will be divided into four categories, where the VIPs and invited guests and male participants will run 4km, while female and special needs individuals will run 3km. To date, the society has 1,500 members.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 22 April - Majlis Persembahan Kokurikulum II Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) selama dua hari bermula hari ini dengan walkaton, perasmian pameran dan jualan serta perasmian tabung untuk Tabung Kemanusiaan Mangsa Gempa Bumi dan Tsunami Jepun.

Mengepalai acara walkaton sejauh 2 kilometer yang dimulakan dengan senaman ringan, dan kemudiannya merasmikan pameran dan jualan dengan memotong reben dan seterusnya menjadi orang pertama menyumbangkan derma ke dalam tabung khusus berkenaan ialah Timbalan Ra'es KUPU SB, Dr Haji Abdullah Awang Lampoh.

Turut serta dalam pameran dan jualan yang diadakan di dalam Dewan Besar KUPU SB itu ialah Sukarelawan KUPU SB, Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah KUPU SB, Kadet Bomba KUPU SB, Jabatan Mufti Kerajaan, Pusat Da'wah Islamiah, Biro Mencegah Rasuah, dua buah toko buku tempatan dan para pensyarah KUPU SB.

Antara lain tujuan majlis persembahan kokurikulum itu diadakan setiap semester adalah untuk mendedahkan aktiviti-aktiviti kokurikulum yang terdapat di KUPU SB, yang termasuklah aktiviti keugamaan selain sukan, pasukan beruniform dan khidmat masyarakat.
Majlis akan diteruskan lagi esok dengan pemeriksaan perbarisan pasukan kawalan, perbarisan lalu pasukan kawalan, persembahan sketsa pertolongan cemas, di samping pameran dan jualan turut disambung. Dijangka menjadi tetamu kehormat esok ialah Ra'es KUPU SB, Dr Hajah Masnon Haji Ibrahim.

BMR dalam pameran itu diwakili Bahagian Pendidikannya yang diketuai oleh Pemangku Penolong Pengarah BMR, Haji Meraj Haji Ahmad, dengan mempamerkan aktiviti sepanjang tahunnya serta mempromosikan barang-barang serta buku-buku Pendidikan Pencegahan Rasuah, dan sesi kuiz interaktif.

Tujuan BMR menyertai pameran itu adalah untuk memberikan pendedahan mengenai rasuah kepada para pelajar KUPU SB dan orang ramai yang berkunjung ke pameran berkenaan ke arah mencapai misi BMR menjadikan Negara ini bebas rasuah.

In conjunction with the International Red Crescent Day, the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) will be holding two charity events next month. This was disclosed during a BDRCS press conference at Pusat Belia in the capital.

The 2011 Humanitarian Charity Expo & Carnival, which is scheduled to run from May 2 to May 8, will be held at the parking area of Hassanal Bolkiah Indoor Stadium in Berakas. The expo will be divided into five segments - bazaar, exhibition, entertainment, games and expo.

The 2011 Humanitarian Charity Walk will, meanwhile, be held on May 8 at the Pedestrian Mal Multipurpose Hall, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex. This charity event, which will commence at 7am, is open to all BDRCS members, youth associations, government agencies, banks, private companies and members of the public.

Proceeds from these charity events will go to various causes such as the humanitarian disaster fund, orphans' fund, as well as welfare associations.The theme of the association's 2011 Humanitarian Charity Expo & Carnival is "The Chain For Humanity".

THE Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) is planning to establish a new Voluntary Aid Unit (VAD) to reach out to those in need of food, shelter and medical supplies.

To realise the establishment of the unit, the non-uniform unit is calling out to Bruneian youth, young adults or elders to join.

"We are planning to open a new unit, which is a voluntary unit and is non-uniform. This unit will not be like the association in carrying out duties, but to do more community work outside the association," the society's Commandant Safinah Hj Othman told The Brunei Times yesterday.

She went on to explain that they were not only limited to attracting the youth to join them, but called on others to also contribute to the community.

Another commandant of the society, Mohd Amirulrizal Makmun, explained that with the occurence of disasters such as fires and floods, those affected need support.

"So we are trying to step forward and reach out to them," he said.

He added part of the plans to set-up the voluntary unit was to find and reach out to the needy people in the community.

"We are looking into providing these people with food, medical supplies and shelter. InsyaAllah, we will establish this unit by the end of the year or early next year," Mohd Amirulrizal said.

Safinah said they have already received applications from volunteers to join the unit, but called out to more potential volunteers.

"We are calling on Bruneians to be willingly committed to join us to carry out our duties as Bruneians, by showing our love for the country and helping others. You may be surprised in carrying out community services," she said.

"For me, carrying out community service gives me the a sense of fulfillment, by helping people in need," she added.

Mohd Amirulrizal echoed Safinah's sentiments, and said setting up the VAD was a platform for Bruneians to give back to society.

"The purpose of the VAD is to make Bruneians realise a lot of benefits have been given by the government. So joining the unit is a way they can give back to society," he said.

Mohd Amirulrizal added other plans in the pipelines was to conduct a medical course that would be recognised worldwide and accredited by the International Federation of Red Cross.

"We will give the participants a certificate which is internationally recognised once they have completed the course," he said.

"To have that certificate is really prestigious, because you will able to help people around the world," he added.

TUTONG, 18 April - Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Daerah Tutong (PBSM) baru-baru ini menerima lawatan rombongan 60 ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Daerah Brunei Muara terdiri daripada ahli dari empat buah sekolah bersama guru pengawas mereka, bertujuan bertukar-tukar fikiran serta mengeratkan tali silaturahim antara satu sama lain.

Peserta rombongan itu adalah dari Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Husain, Sekolah Menengah Lambak Kiri, Sekolah Menengah Masin dan Sekolah Menengah Awang Semaun.

Rombongan diketuai oleh Pegawai Kadet, Awang Mohd Noorhamdillah Suhaili dan ketibaan mereka dialu-alukan oleh Pengerusi Majlis, Awang Mohd Shahrol Redhwan Haji Mohd Yusof serta ahli-ahli jawatankuasa lain.

Sebelum acara dimulakan, bacaan Doa Selamat dibacakan oleh ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah (PBSM), seterusnya ucapan alu-aluan oleh pengerusi majlis dan disusuli ucapan daripada ketua rombongan.

Red Crescent Society welcomes 155 new members

BRUNEI-MUARA Monday, April 4, 2011 BRUNEI Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) has recruited 155 new members yesterday after taking part in a recent training workshop with the Department of Co-Curriculum Education (JPKK). Head of the Uniform Division at JPKK Jalil Pengarah Hj Kapitan said out of the 14 participating secondary schools, this year saw the participation of the first college, Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPU SB), contributing 60 of the 155 new members.

He said the Red Crescent Society has the potential of increasing its membership by making the activities more interesting, challenging and worthwhile as previously mentioned by Acting Director of Co-Curriculum Education in Belait District Hj Kassim Mohammad Yassin. Jalil added that the Belait acting director called on leaders of associations to improve their operations to increase their members among the student population.

Statistics show that only 634 students are involved in the Red Crescent Society last year. "Hopefully, the involvement of the students in this association will inspire and motivate themselves to excel in learning," he said. He hoped that their involvement would keep them away from making the association a stepping stone for immoral acts or as an escape from the care of their parents.

Assistant Director (Secondary Education Division) Roslin Suhailee from the Ministry of Education, who was the guest of honour, handed the certificates of attendance to representatives of the 14 schools. Those which took part in the training workshop were Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien College, Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Pengiran Isteri Hjh Mariam Secondary School, Rimba Secondary School, Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School, Sayyidina Husain Secondary School, Masin Secondary School, Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School, Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School, Berakas Secondary School, Awang Semaun Secondary School, St Andrew's School, Lambak Kiri Secondary School as well as KUPU SB.

Attachment students receive certificates of completion

A ceremony to present certificates was held for uniformed group members on an attachment programme at Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait recently.

The certificates were presented to mark the completion of the attachment programme organised by Belait Red Crescent Association.

The attachment programme started on March 21 with 65 secondary school students comprising members of Red Crescent groups, Scouts and Girl Guides from PAP Hjh Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Secondary School in Lumut, PJN Pg Abu Bakar Secondary School and Sayyidina Ali Secondary School, Kuala Belait.

The Director of Co-Curriculum Education Department, Awang Hj Kassim bin Haji Mohd Yassin was present as the guest of honour to present certificates to the students.

In his speech, he said it is an interesting and beneficial project for uniformed groups. He added that it should be extended and organised by Red Crescent Association in other districts.

He believes that such a project provides the members with the experience and exposure to boost their credentials when applying for jobs. The attachment programme also helps promote cooperation between three uniformed groups; foster closer relations and promote teamwork. The students also assist nurses at the hospital; build knowledge in nursing field and help fulfill the students' time during the school holidays.

In the project, participants were attached at several wards in the hospital such as the emergency ward, record room, outpatient ward, small operating room and PHY ward dressed in their respective uniforms. Apart from that, the attachment programme equipped the members with knowledge and basic life skill in case of emergency or natural disasters like floods in Brunei.

He further highlighted that according to statistics from Red Crescent Association in Brunei, there are only 634 members comprising students and the number is comparatively small than other uniformed groups. Therefore, he advised the association to boost participation by organising various activities and make it more attractive and appealing to students. These should be done in the interest of developing and increasing the number of association members.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Awg Hj Pungut bin Hj Damit said the annual project has been carried out for the ninth time where members are assigned to carry out light duties in the hospital. From the project, the members showed enthusiasm where nurses taught them how to handle patients like lifting patients from the wheelchair to the bed, bringing patients to the X-ray room, laboratory and also assist physiotherapists to cleanup the bed and other tasks.

This year, the Belait Red Crescent Association received 100 registrations for the project but only 60 members were accepted. However, the association is planning to conduct the programme sometime in December to give opportunity for other members. Therefore it is imperative for parents to encourage their students to take part in extra curricular activities, the chairman noted.

Bulan Sabit sumbang peti pertolongan cemas

KUALA BELAIT, 23 Feb – Sebagai kesinambungan kepada kursus-kursus asas yang telah diadakan di beberapa buah sekolah-sekolah rendah di daerah ini, Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait telah menyumbangkan peti pertolongan cemas kepada sekolah-sekolah itu.

Sumbangan peti pertolongan cemas itu setakat ini telah disampaikan kepada dua buah sekolah rendah iaitu Sekolah Rendah Chung Lian, Sungai Liang dan Sekolah Rendah Ahmad Tajuddin, Kuala Belait, sementara itu sumbangan kepada sekolah-sekolah lainnya akan dilakukan dalam sedikit masa lagi.

Awang Chai Yum Fatt turut menyerahkan peti kecemasan kepada guru besar Sekolah Chung Lian Sungai Liang Awang Aziz Mustapha Kula.

Peti pertolongan cemas itu disampaikan oleh pengerusi Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait Awang Chai Yum Fatt.

Sementara dalam acara penyampaian kepada Sekolah Rendah Ahmad Tajuddin dekat sini, beliau menyerahkannya kepada penolong Guru Kanan Pentadbiran Judith Liew Min Cho selaku wakil guru besar sekolah itu.

Terdahulu daripada itu penyerahan peti kecemasan telah dilakukan oleh Pegawai Kemasyarakatan dan Sosial persatuan itu, Awang Lim Thian Min kepada Pengerusi Persatuan itu Awang Chai Yum Fatt.

Penyampaian peti kecemasan kepada Sekolah Rendah Ahmad Tajuddin Awang Chai Yum Fatt telah menyerahkannya kepada Penolong guru kanan Pentadbiran Judith Liew Min Cho selaku wakil guru besar sekolah tersebut.

Kursus-kursus asas Pertolongan Cemas kepada sekolah-sekolah Kerajaan dan bukan Kerajaan telah mula diadakan pada bulan Disember lalu dan ia akan diteruskan lagi bermula 8 Mac nanti dan kali ini ianya akan dilaratkan bagi syarikat-syarikat swasta terutama sekali yang di bawah lingkungan Jabatan Bandaran Kuala Belait dan Seria.

Selain itu, kursus-kursus yang serupa juga akan diteruskan dalam jangka masa yang panjang dan akan turut dilaratkan kepada persatuan-persatuan dan orang-orang perseorangan, dengan tujuan untuk memberikan ilmu pengetahuan asas pertolongan cemas dan kepentingannya kepada semua golongan masyarakat.

ENSURING the general well-being and good health of the thousands of participants and spectators comprising the public during the 27th National Day Celebration at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien yesterday was a top priority of the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Executive Committee of the 27th National Day celebrations.

In an interview with the Bulletin, the commander for medical coverage on Brunei’s 27th National Day, Hjh Nora bte Hj Mohd Yussof, said that they devised extensive strategies covering various locations in the capital. Speaking from the mobile command post, she said, “Logistic preparations were done much earlier, even before the rehearsals to ensure a smooth operation, not only for common ailments but also for patients who require heavy duty or emergency treatments. The Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien accommodated two static clinics, of which one was mainly for participants in the field while the second next to the Royal Regalia Building catered to participants in the flag-waving line-up.”

First-aid tents were also seen set-up across the Taman and at designated areas in the capital as observation points and to treat minor casualties. Eight ambulances were also on standby in case of scenarios where people would be required to receive medical attention at the hospital. A ‘walking team’ was also sent to the field during the march past and performances to indentify any potential need for medical attention.

In addition she also added that over 100 volunteers from the Red Crescent society and paramedics from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces also joined hands in providing their assistance and services.

During the march past and field performances, the Bulletin observed fewer than five people being ushered on a stretcher due to dehydration and heat stroke as temperature gradually rose in the morning. When asked about how the ministry is handling the heat stroke cases, which is not uncommon during national day celebrations, Hjh Nora said, “The MoH does give health advice to all participants through broadcasts on radio and television and did inform schools and departments joining the celebration to take proper meals and drink enough water during times of intense heat to prevent heat-stroke. We also advise people who are suffering from pre-existing medical conditions to not partake in the celebration to prevent risking further harm.”

A paramedic from RIPAS, Hj Md Shahnol bin Hj Bakar, who was stationed in front of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex said, “We have only received minor cases today, nothing serious. Patients with cases of heat-stroke, blisters and mild headaches were promptly treated at out first-aid kiosk. Taking into account the uncertainty of weather conditions nowadays, so far it has been a smooth operation and successful one.”

A Year 10 student from Sekolah Menengah Masin and a volunteer from the Red Crescent Society, Zulfadli bin Hasli, expressed his delight to see the parade from inside the Taman itself.

He said that the apart from the unforgettable experience, he is also more than happy to help people who required medical attention during the celebration and felt so proud and patriotic for contributing to his country. The Red Crescent volunteers comprised secondary school students who joined the society as part of their co-curricular activities.

THE Belait Red Crescent Society took the initiative to build closer ties with the Belait education sector recently by linking up with two more secondary schools in the Belait district.Red Cross Society of both Kuala Belait's Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Secondary School and Sungai Liang's Chung Lian School will now be linked to the Belait Red Crescent, and will in turn receive support from the district level society in terms of first aid training and support.Society Chairman Chai Yum Fatt was present at both schools to present first aid kits to signify the closer links between the parties. Four medical field clinics treat 93 ailing participants

NINETY-THREE people suffering from various ailments were reported at the four medical field clinics stationed in the capital during the 27th National Day celebrations at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien yesterday.

Three of the patients were taken to Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital for further treatment.

Hypoglacemia, dehydration, gastric pains, heatstroke, fever, vomiting, giddiness, asthma, headache and abdominal pains were among the most common complaints from the patients, mostly consisting of participants of the National Day procession.

"Many people didn't eat before they came to the padang in the morning resulting in low blood sugar and dehydration. Some people who suffer from chronic illnesses are affected by heat and crowded conditions. There are also some people who forget to take their medication," said Hjh Nora Hj Yusof, head of Emergency Medical Ambulance Services (Emas).

It was to cater for any potential medical emergency that the Ministry of Health (MoH) set up four makeshift clinics in the capital, one at the Taman, one at the Royal Regalia, one at the waterfront and another medical reception service (MRS) clinic which was run by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.The ministry deployed 202 medical personnel to ensure the safety of the public and 21,000 participants during the festivities. The nine medical teams that were stationed around the national day venue comprised 13 doctors, 45 paramedics, 60 nurses and 100 volunteers from the Red Crescent Society.

If a casualty were to be sighted on the field, the closest medical team will respond by extracting the patient off the field on a stretcher and taking them to the nearest makeshift clinic.

Hjh Nora said there were also nine ambulances on standby around the capital to transfer patients to the hospital if the need arises.

The air-conditioned clinics, housed in makeshift tents, provide a welcome respite for most patients who were treated on the spot by medical personnel. Most patients were given an oral rehydration salt to combat water loss while more serious cases are treated with a glucose drip.

A medical officer at the MRS Clinic, Lt Pg Hjh Salizah Pg Hj Ibrahim said they received two serious cases this year of patients complaining of chest pains. One recovered and was discharged while the other was sent to Ripas Hospital for further tests. Chest pains could be the result of lack of oxygen, so an oxygen-mask was supplied to the patient before he boarded an ambulance, she said.

Yani Norhafidahyani Juali, a student from Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School was one of the field performers who fainted before the main performance began.

"I had trained for a week for this event,"she said with disappointment. Yani told The Brunei Times she felt fine in the morning and was excited to take part in the festivities. "Then I collapsed. I lost my umbrella, so now I can only watch," she said, after spending two hours inside the army tent recovering.

KUALA BELAIT, 1 Feb - Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait kini sedang membukakan pengambilan ahli-ahli baru bagi tahun 2011 bermula hari ini sehingga 5 Februari ini.

Borang-borang untuk menjadi ahli persatuan itu boleh didapati di ibu pejabatnya di alamat Blok 248 A1 Jalan Bendahari Kuala Belait, bermula daripada pukul 9.00 pagi hingga 4.30 petang.

Setiap pendaftaran hendaklah disertakan dengan yuran tahunan $2.00 dan mengisikan borang secara lengkap. Ia dibukakan kepada penduduk dan rakyat Negara Brunei Darussalam yang bermastautin di Daerah Belait berumur 13 tahun ke atas lelaki dan perempuan.

Antara syarat menjadi ahli adalah mereka yang belum menjadi ahli kepada sebarang pertubuhan dan persatuan sebelum ini dan ahli-ahli dibukakan juga untuk disertai oleh penuntut-penuntut sekolah rendah kerajaan dan bukan kerajaan.

Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait kini mempunyai 13 buah unit di beberapa buah sekolah-sekolah rendah dan menengah kerajaan dan bukan kerajaan.

Pada masa ini persatuan tersebut mempunyai seramai lebih 200 orang ahli lelaki dan perempuan dan telah aktif melaksanakan beberapa buah program pada tahun lalu, termasuk merancang beberapa lagi program tahun ini.

Program ini termasuklah latihan kepada tiga buah badan beruniform Persatuan Pengakap dan Persatuan Pandu Puteri dan Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah pada bulan Mac di Hospital Suri Seri Begawan Kuala Belait dan juga lawatan ke cawangan Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Kota Kinabalu dijadualkan pada Jun nanti.

Belait Red Crescent Association open for registration

The Belait District Red Crescent Association is now open for taking in new members for the year 2011.

Interested parties can do so by filling up a form and paying a $3 yearly fee.

The form can be taken from their head office at Block 248, A1, Jalan Bendahari, Kuala Belait not later than February 5.

It is also open for existing members to renew their fees for this year.

Membership for the association is open to Brunei nationals in the district including students of government and non-government primary and secondary schools in the district.

To be a member of the Red Crescent Association, participants, boys and girls and men and women, should be aged 13 and above and are currently not a member of any association or organisation.

The Belait District Red Crescent Association has currently set up 13 units at a few government and non-government primary and secondary schools in the Belait District and currently has a total of more than 200 members of various ages.

THE Belait Red Crescent has been urged by the Belait District Officer to take on more responsibility during their visit to the District Office in Kuala Belait yesterday morning.

The visit was part of the non-governmental organisation's (NGO) plan to invite the District Officer Matusin Orang Kaya Sura Hj Tuba to become the society's Honourary Advisor.

While accepting the appointment as the Honourary Advisory, Matusin has on behalf of the Red Crescent of Brunei Darussalam, officially presented Chai Yum Fatt as the Chairman of Belait Red Crescent.

Speaking at the ceremony, Matusin reminded the society members that they must try to learn as much as possible from their experiences both as Red Crescent members and from their social lives, stressing that there were no shortcuts to success.

He also urged the members to continuously improve their knowledge on the job, and carry out their duties sincerely, remembering not the rewards that they maybe getting rather to concentrate on the contributions that they can make.

Speaking to The Brunei Times after the ceremony, the District Officer said that he wanted to see more youths getting themselves involved in the setup.

"What I hope to see is that they will be able to train more youngsters to take on more responsibilities. The youths are the future leaders and what we see today in them is the future of our country," added Matusin.

He said: "The NGOs should also take the initiative to help out in the various events, and the help by Red Crescent in the recent flood relief efforts will be a good example."

The visit by the Belait Red Crescent was also part of their plans to strengthen relations with the government agencies in the district with an eye on ensuring a higher level of cooperations in the future.

Red Crescent donates to Seria Old Folks Home

THE Belait Red Crescent committee members contributed foodstuff to the Old Folks Home in Seria recently.

The delegation that was led by the Red Crescent Chairman Chai Yum Fatt saw the contribution of popular Chinese treats, rice, dried noodles, a Chinese hamper and several canned food for the residents at the old folks home.

The delegation also included a good samaritan, Chan Liong, who presented two whole chickens and glutinous rice cakes to the elderly staying at the charitable home which depended on public donations.

The Red Crescent committee members also presented ang pow (red packet) the old folks in the spirit of the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.

The society that was established in 1950 has plans to conduct more social work after the festive celebration.

Salah seorang daripada penghuni Rumah Orang Tua Seria yang tidak lagi boleh berjalan turut dilawat ke biliknya kemudian turut dihulurkan sumbangan sempena sambutan Tahun Baru Cina disampaikan oleh Awang Chai Yum Fatt.

SERIA, 28 Jan - Serombongan ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait telah membuat kunjungan ke Rumah Orang Tua dekat sini hari ini.

Rombongan tersebut yang diketuai oleh Pengerusi Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait, Awang Chai Yum Fatt telah turut disertai oleh beberapa ahli-ahli lainnya termasuk Awang Young Kon Siew, Awang Young Kiam Pin, Awang Lim Thian Ming, Awang Chiam Toon Kwang, Awang Liew Hian Hong dan Awang Haji Ismail Kassim.

Kunjungan tersebut merupakan kesinambungan melalui siri lawatan Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah cawangan Daerah Belait ke jabatan-jabatan kerajaan pada beberapa minggu lalu.

Bersempena dengan sambutan Tahun Baru Cina, persatuan tersebut telah membuat inisiatif untuk mengunjungi penghuni-penghuni Rumah Orang Tua di pekan ini, untuk menyampaikan sumbangan berupa keperluan makanan seharian dan semasa perayaan nanti, dan juga menyampaikan sumbangan "Hoong Pau".

Sumbangan Hoong Pau disempurnakan penyampaiannya oleh pengerusi persatuan tersebut, Awang Chai Yum Fatt disertai sama penyampaian sumbangan Hoong Pau daripada ahli-ahli lainnya yang menyertai kunjungan tersebut.

Sementara itu Awang Chai Yum Fatt ketika ditemui pula menyatakan, persatuan mereka dijangka akan mengadakan perjanjian kerjasama melalui penandatanganan perjanjian persefahaman (MoU) bersama-sama dengan Jawatankuasa Majlis Rumah Orang Tua Seria dalam masa terdekat ini, sebagai salah satu kegiatan mereka dalam meningkatkan kegiatan kemasyarakatan terutama sekali kepada orang-orang tua.

Kunjungan hari ini juga turut bertujuan untuk terus menanamkan perasaan kasih dan sayang terhadap orang-orang tua yang perlu terus diberikan keprihatinan sebagai membantu memberikan mereka kegembiraan dan keceriaan terutama sekali menjelangnya sambutan Tahun Baru Cina yang hanya tinggal beberapa hari saja lagi.

Di samping itu ahli-ahli persatuan itu juga berhasrat untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kefahaman ke atas tugas-tugas yang perlu mereka laksanakan melalui persatuan itu secara penuh komitmen dan ikhlas.

Menurut Awang Chai Yum Fatt, mereka juga akan melaksanakan kegiatan-kegiatan yang menjurus ke arah mengukuhkan ikatan silaturahim bersama-sama dengan masyarakat dan mengetengahkan persatuan mereka untuk lebih dikenali oleh orang ramai dan juga mengajak mereka yang berminat untuk menyertainya terutamanya di kalangan belia-belia.

Red Crescent Belait Members Visit Old Folks Home In Seria

Following visits to several government departments, the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society Belait branch visited the old folks home in Seria yesterday morning.

The group was led by Chairman Mr Chai Yum Fatt.

According to the chairman, the visit is held annually as part of the society's responsibility as a non-governmental organisation to be aware of the welfare of senior citizens at home in the district.

In addition, it hopes to create awareness to the public of their social responsibility to care and provide attention to the elderly, as well as appreciate or acknowledge the elderly contribution to the nation.

During the visit, the visitors handed 'angpows' to the senior citizens.

Festive gifts and hampers were also presented to the old folks home to mark the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.

The chairman added, "This year, the Red Crescent Society Belait branch hopes to promote the movement of the organisation by building rapports with various communities in the district in order to extend their contributions or services."

THE Belait Red Crescent Society was recently asked to work more closely with small and medium enterprises in the district with regards to providing training in first aid and emergency procedures by the Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Office.

The idea was mooted to Belait Red Crescent Chairman Chai Yum Fatt by the Municipal Office Acting Chairman Sarih Tabong during a courtesy visit by the Belait Red Crescent members to the Municipal Office on earlier this week.

The visit by the society was aimed at identifying how both parties can work closer together to provide first aid services to residents in Kuala Belait and Seria.

During the meeting, the Municipal Office Acting Chairman suggested to Chai that Belait Red Crescent should work towards a closer relation with not just government agencies and non-government organisations, but also the smaller businesses.

The idea was to collaborate with various restaurants, departmental stores, food stalls, and workshops under the Municipal Office to provide training assistance to their staff.

No concrete plans have yet been set by either parties, but both agreed to come up with training programmes, to be implemented in stages, so that workers will know how to perform in case of emergency circumstances that might happen in their vicinity.

Also present at the meeting were Belait Red Crescent Society Treasurer Chee Keong Tung and Assistant Chairman Hj Ismail Kassim, as well as officers from the Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Office.

More dry food, diapers needed for Aceh survivors

THE 300-strong Belait District Red Crescent Association is appealing for more dry foods and disposable diapers as it steps up its collection of clothes, food and medical aid to help the survivors of the tsunami disaster.

The donation campaign started two days after the disaster struck with the opening of a donation reception centre at the association’s offices at Jalan Bendahari.

International Public Communications Officer of the association, Awang Haji Mohd. Ali, said that the association is accepting donations from 7 am to 10 pm everyday.

More than 20 boxes of clothes and baby items have been collected from the Scouts Association, the public and some private companies in the district, he said.

Items such as dry foods and disposable diapers are still needed to help the survivors in the tsunami-stricken Indonesian region of Aceh, he said.

He said that donations were also raised through the sales of flags and donation boxes placed at supermarkets and shops in the district – the collections will continue until February.

He added that about 20 members of the association will be sent to Aceh and Sri Lanka to help the tsunami victims for about six months.

The aid programme is sponsored by International Red Cross Association of Thailand and run by the International Red Cross Association of Indonesia.

However, the volunteers are still awaiting approval from the Government before they are flown off to the tsunami-hit areas.

Kursus Bantuan Kecemasan tingkat pengetahuan peserta

KUALA BELAIT, Khamis - Sebagai menambahkan lagi kesedaran tentang pentingnya memberikan bantuan kecemasan dan menyelamatkan nyawa kepada mereka yang memerlukan, Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Belait dengan kerjasama Hospital Suri Seri Begawan Belait menganjurkan Kursus Bantuan Kecemasan selama dua hari bertempat di Unit Kakitangan Pembangunan Profesional hospital berkenaan dekat sini.

Kursus tersebut telah disertai oleh guru-guru daripada sekolah-sekolah kerajaan dan bukan kerajaan serta ahli-ahli Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah daerah ini. Guru-guru yang dilibatkan dalam kursus tersebut adalah di kalangan ketua-ketua Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah yang ditubuhkan di sekolah-sekolah seperti Sekolah Rendah Ahmad Tajuddin, Sekolah Menengah Perdana Wazir, Sekolah Menengah PAP Hajah Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Lumut dan Sekolah Chung Lian.

Pada hari pertama kursus tersebut para peserta telah diperkenalkan dengan kursus-kursus bantuan kecemasan dan juga telah diberikan taklimat penerangan mengenainya. Selain mereka juga telah diberikan latihan praktikal memberikan bantuan kecemasan kepada orang-orang yang pengsan atau mengalami kecederaan.

Di samping itu para peserta juga turut diajarkan tentang teknik-teknik yang betul mengikatkan kain pembalut, dan juga cara memposisikan badan orang yang mendapat kecederaan dan sebagainya.

Kursus dua hari itu telah dikendalikan oleh empat orang pengajar dan dua orang penyelaras dan telah berakhir hari ini dengan penyampaian sijil penyertaan.

Melawat Cawangan Bulan Sabit Merah Tutong

TUTONG – Selasa – Sekumpulan 15 orang anggota Palang Merah dari Singapura hari ini mengadakan lawatan ke Cawangan Bulan Sabit Merah Daerah Tutong. Rombongan itu disambut oleh Pengarah Bulan Sabit Merah Daerah Tutong Awang Haji Abu Bakar Duraman.

SINGAPORE RED CRESCENT HERE ON A MISSION

A group of Singapore Red Crescent members Tuesday paid visits to both their Tutong and Kuala Belait counterparts, in hopes of fostering stronger ties. At the Belait headquarters, the visiting delegation was brief by Red Crescent Officer Hj Bidin bin Che Drahman. The group also dropped by Belait District Office, where they were greeted on arrival by Special Duties Office Awg Hj Sueb Rizal bin Haji Abd Malek.

Red Crescent seeks more volunteers

THE Red Crescent Society is intensifying its recruitment efforts by roping in more veteran volunteers. Secretary General of the Brunei Red Crescent Society, Hj Julaini Hj Latif told The Brunei Times on the sidelines of the society's annual general meeting yesterday that that they had some difficulties and constraints compared to other Red Crescent societies in the region.

He explained that as majority of the society's members were students,most of the activities were limited to weekends even then, he added, "we cannot totally rely on the children because they have a commitment to school and exam preparations".

In light of the circumstance it is on the organisation's agenda to "enhance recruitment" by widening the scope to include "veterans, adults, and especially those who have retired and (are) interested to continue (volunteer service)".

Hj Julaini said that the best medium for potential volunteers to contact the organisation at the moment would be to email bdredcrescent@gmail.com as they were in the process of developing a blog in their website.

Asked about the society's achievements over the years, Hj Julaini said, "We are making steady progress; slow but definitely steady."

"In March this year, we were given the responsibility and trust by the International Federation for Red Crescent (IFRC) for Brunei to host an Asean meeting on Red Crescent societies (in the region)."

He shared that the society has secured close working ties with the Accident and Emergency Department at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (Ripas) Hospital as there were times where they needed the Red Crescent members to help them and at the same time they coached and trained the members as well.

He said during the flood on September 9, this year the society had lent its services wherever necessary and as a result became one of the members on standby for the National Disaster Management Centre.

Asked whether the society has extended their aid across domestic borders, for instance the recent tsunami and earthquake in Indonesia, the secretary general said, "during that time we did not actually go there, but we were ready with a small team".

He added, "The system here is (such that) we can not simply go. We have to wait and get permission from the responsible departments."

Asked if there is a core group of members who can assign and relieve people of positions, Hj Julaini replied, "In principle its a voluntary (organisation)," adding that in all his service he has not experienced such and that "position comes second" to "how best we can give our service".

Sengatan Serangga

Sengatan lebah, penyengat atau tebuan boleh menyebabkan kesakitan dan merbahaya. Jika disengat oleh sekumpulan salah satu dari serangga ini, ia boleh membawa maut. Jika disengat di leher atau di mulut maka bengkak yang teruk akan terjadi. Serangga lain yang memberikan sengatan bisa ialah kala jengking dan lipan.

Tanda-tanda sengatan:
- Sakit yang amat sangat di tempat yang disengat
- Bengkak di sekeliling tempat yang disengat dengan titik merah di tengah-tengah
- Mengakibatkan kejutan dan tidak sedarkan diri

Lebah

Cara merawat:
- Jika sengat tertanam dalam kulit, gunakan angkub/penyepit. Halakan penyepit hampir dengan kulit kemudian sepit sengat dan keluarkan
- Oleh kerana sengatan lebah bertindakbalas dengan asid, ia boleh dirawat dengan menyapukan sedikit soda atau ammonia.

Sengatan Penyengat

Cara merawat:
1. Keluarkan sengatnya (sama seperti sengat lebah) dengan menggunakan angkub/penyepit
2. Sengat penyengat bertindak balas dengan alkali, ia boleh dirawat dengan menyapukan sedikit cairan asid yang lemah seperti cuka atau air asam limau.

Sengatan Tebuan

Cara merawat:
1. Sengatan tebuan adalah bisa. Jangan cuba mengeluarkan sengatnya
2. Jangan benarkan mangsa menyentuh tempat sengatan
3. Kikis kulit di tempat sengatan dengan teliti sehingga sengatnya kelihatan
4. Kemudian letakkan ais atau air sejuk di tempat sengatan
5. Dapatkan rawatan doktor

BDRCS attends SEA Youth Director Meeting

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, September 21 - Two officers of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) will be representing Brunei Darussalam at the 8th Southeast Asia Youth Director Meeting and 1st Youth Leaders Forum scheduled to take place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from September 21 to 23, 2010.

The two officers representing BDRCS are Awang Haji Muhammad Suhaimi bin Haji Ibrahim and Awang Mohammad Rosdi bin Haji Ruslan who are respectively Commander and Assistant Commander in BDRCS. Awang Haji Muhammad Suhaimi will be attending the Youth Director Meeting while Awang Muhammad Rosdi will be attending the Youth Leaders Forum.

Present to bid farewell at the Brunei International Airport is a member of BDRCS National Council, Haji Julaini bin Haji Abd Latip (Director of Development and Training).

The meeting and forum will provide another opportunity to all youth leaders and practitioners from South East Asia National Societies to review the achievement in 2009, the challenges, lesson learned and the new thought that need to be contributed in the future.

It is undoubtedly beneficial for BDRCS as it provides a platform to share and learn new and valuable approaches to youth movements with other participants.

The meeting and forum is jointly organised by IFRC Cambodia Country Office and the Cambodian Red Cross (CRC). It is an annual event and each SEA Red Cross/Crescent Societies will be given the opportunity to be the host country.

This year’s meeting will focus on several key themes, namely Youth Empowerment; Youth & Governance; Youth & Leadership; Youth & Fundraising; Youth Forum/Club/Network. These themes are aligned with the Federation Strategic 2020 themes which is ‘doing more, doing better, and reaching further’.

Rumah Terbuka Aidilfitri Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah NBD

Naib Presiden Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah NBD (tengah) ketika menghadiri Majlis Sambutan Hari Raya Aidilfitri itu.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Ahad - Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Cawangan Daerah Brunei Muara menganjurkan Sambutan Hari Raya Aidilfitri Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Negara Brunei Darussalam yang berlangsung di Dewan Setia Negara, Jabatan Penerangan, Lapangan Terbang Lama Berakas, di sini, hari ini.

Sambutan Hari Raya Aidilfitri yang bertemakan "Rumah Terbuka Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah" itu adalah yang pertama kalinya diadakan melibatkan semua peringkat Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah dari ke empat-empat daerah termasuk peringkat kebangsaan dan dijangka akan menjadikan projek seumpamanya sebagai projek tahunan.

Antara lain sambutan itu diadakan ialah untuk mengumpulkan semua warga Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah yang sudah lama bergiat mahupun yang baru bergiat dari semua peringkat untuk saling kenal mengenali dan beramah mesra bagi mengeratkan lagi hubungan silaturahim serta memupuk semangat bersatu padu, bekerjasama dan melahirkan sifat kekeluargaan di dalam berpersatuan.

Sambutan juga diselajurkan dengan majlis doa kesyukuran di atas terlaksananya dan berjalan lancarnya aktiviti-aktiviti yang telah pun dijalankan sepanjang bulan Ramadan termasuklah penyertaan persatuan memberi bantuan kepada pihak EMAS Hospital RIPAS dalam beberapa acara seperti Majlis Kurnia Peribadi Ke bawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah sempena Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2010 di keempat-empat daerah serta Sambutan Junjung Ziarah Hari Raya di Istana Nurul Iman pada tahun ini dengan memberikan khidmat sukarela yang murni demi agama, bangsa dan negara.

Hadir selaku tetamu kehormat di majlis berkenaan ialah Naib Presiden Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Negara Brunei Darussalam, Datin Hajah Siti Hajah POKSS DP Haji Mohd Yusof.
