Rimba II Secondary School (SM Rimba II) yesterday became the latest of secondary schools nationwide to pledge its support for the Road Safety Programme 2012, an international programme which was introduced by the International Federation of Red Crescent Society five years ago to outline the responsibility in providing knowledge on road safety.
Road accidents cause losses not only in the form of psychological effects and risks to the victims and family members, but also to the economy of the country. Therefore the Red Crescent Society, especially at the Asean level, is working together with IFRC to come up with a number of awareness programmes for road safety following the needs and requirements of each respective country.
Currently, the Red Crescent Society of the Brunei-Muara District, with the cooperation of the Brunei National Road Safety Council, has come up with the Road Safety Pledging programme to instil the culture of road safety and to inject the students to be an agent of road safety messages for people around them.
The five main fundamental rules that need to be addressed are wearing seat belts, observing the speed limit, not using mobile phones while driving, using pedestrian walkways and avoiding tailgating.
Each school's Red Crescent unit continues to play an important role in monitoring the programmes in each school. Yesterday saw the Principal of Rimba II Secondary School, Hjh Suriani binti Hj Hashim leading the way in making the pledge for road safety.
A banner for the road safety awareness programme was handed over to the principal by Hj Abdul Majid bin Hj Hidup from Insurans Islam Taib.
Capt (RC) Aneta Yusuf, Head of Secretariat of the Red Crescent Society of Brunei-Muara, in her speech said, "The programme is also in support of His Majesty's titah in conjunction with the 28th National Day of Brunei Darussalam on February 23, 2012."
She also revealed, "Red Crescent Society of Brunei-Muara will continue to come up with an action plan in cooperation with the Road Safety Council and strategic partners in the corporate sector to create a co-curriculum activity through various educational activities to raise awareness on road safety through the department of co-curriculum education under the Ministry of Education next year." The students also read out the road safety oaths and then made their pledges on www.bruneiredcrescent.com/roadsafetypledge/.

Teachers get familiar with int'l humanitarian basic rules

Sunday, May 27, 2012

THE Department of Co-Curriculum, Ministry of Education has introduced a programme to familiarise supervising teachers of uniformed groups in schools on the basic rules and principles of international humanitarian laws during its annual camp which is being held at Sultan Hassan Secondary School in Temburong District.

Involving 38 supervising teachers of Army, Police and and Fire brigade Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides as well as the Red Crescent Society, the programme is in line with the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society's (Brunei-Muara Division).

According to their press release, the 'Exploring Humanitarian Law' (EHL) is an education programme where participants could give better picture and understandings to their students who are aged between 13 and 18 years old.

The teaching methods used in EHL require students to play an active role in the process of learning. This enables them to develop a humanitarian perspective and to understand a subject as seemingly dry, and complicated, as EHL.

The 'Exploring Humanitarian Law' uses case studies, and builds upon students own experiences and way of thinking to examine the destructiveness of war which also describes the behaviour of actual people who are caught up in situations where humanitarian action is required.

The statement added that by examining these situations, students develop a new perspective and begin to understand the need for rules to protect life and human dignity during war.

The programme was introduced as a topic and specific module during the activities in the annual camp yesterday where two specialists on International Humanitarian Law were also invited from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Facilitating the programme was Dr Toh Wah Seng and Chin Lili, programme officers from the International Committee for the Red Cross Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The clean-up project was led by Hj Muhd Suhaimi Hj Ibrahim, the Director of the Brunei Muara District Red Crescent Society.

"We have been doing this since 2010 and during that time our first experience was to cover two areas of Muslim cemeteries in Terunjing and Rangas, while last year we did the clean-up at Halangan Besar Islamic Cemetery," the director said.

"This is also our ways to give back to the community and helping them out such as with our recent role in the BIBD's Sirah Amal charity drive. We joined them on their trips to all four districts and visited the less fortunate families to hand them donations. Our role in the charity drive was to identify the needs of the less fortunate families so we know how exactly to help them out in anyways possible," said the director.

He has also mentioned that the RCS will be holding few upcoming events such as the Tahlil and Doa Arwah ceremony for their late members and officials as well as holding Hari Raya event together with 200 less fortunate families and orphans.

SEA (MAA51001) Mid-year report 2012

This report covers the period 1 January 2012 to 30 June 2012

Overview

The first half of 2012 saw a period of stabilization after the significant transition of late 2011. The regional office‟s focus on resilience increased as well as a more linked up and holistic approach to support towards three priorities: 1) national society capacity building particularly in terms of youth and volunteers; 2) tools and approaches that support sustainable efforts to enhance community resilience; and 3) a better protection and projection of the role of the Red Cross Red Crescent – via strengthened approaches in humanitarian diplomacy – in the changing field of disaster management within the Southeast Asian region. The regional office continued to work through the six IFRC country offices and prioritize the 11 national societies of the Southeast Asia region as well as international Red Cross Red Crescent actors, including partner national societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

It is encouraging to report that national society regional mechanisms took significant steps forward. The organizational development forum nominated a standing chair (secretary general of Brunei Red Crescent Society) that aimed to better manage preparation for, running of, and follow up to the forum. The regional disaster management committee (RDMC) also nominated a standing chairperson (director of Thai Red Cross relief and community health bureau) and agreed to aim for country-level integration of programming by 2014.

The RDMC will meet again in Cambodia in November to follow up decisions from the Annual Asia Red Cross Red Crescent Leaders Meeting in July in Myanmar.

Of minor concern is the fact that progress on signing the ASEAN cooperation framework agreement remains halting. Changes are afoot in terms of heads of country and regional office in Southeast Asia with recruitment underway for both Cambodia and Myanmar.
